Something that has always bothered me about the StarTrek universe was the fact that no one ever dealt with anyone having aids, getting cancer, being gay... These things happen every day, yet its never on the show! Why is that? I have created this thread because it appears that T'Pol (Jolene Blalock, Enterprise) will now be dealing with aids. Oh yeah Click here. Should ST be dealing with every day problems, or should it stay the way it is?
ONe thing to remember is that military forces(verification, lease)try to limit homosexual behavior. If the Federation navy is like this, then they would have no reason to do this, unless they find a place like Athos. Otherwise, it depends on medical tech.
Haven't they curred all that stuff by then? Just because something is an issue now doesn't mean it will be in the 24th century or whenever they are. ST never deals with any kind of issues. I kind of like it that way. It's a fantasy show. they always seem to imply that by then human kind has matured and that they live in this semi-uptopia with no hunger or poverty. and they never really explain how that happened(do they?) It would be strange to see a TNG episode about some crew member coming out of the closest (not that there's anything wrong with that)
I seem to recall an episode of 'next generation' in which the Enterprise visited a planet where all the aliens were homosexual (or some weird alien equivalent) and a heterosexual alien tried to get asylum on the Enterprise.
ahh, that's right. good one. as i recall the alien was forced to conform with societies expectations in the end. she made this big speach about her life style being her personal choice that there wasn't anything wrong with her. but then they put her on some drugs to make her "normal". so maybe Star Trek does try to relate to curent day issues..

Remember the original Star Trek episode where they dealt with racism from an outsider's point of view (since supposedly racism by then for Earth was non-existant). The two sides of the species hated each other, and destroyed their world. At the end, Kirk asked why they fought so much if they were so much alike, and they state, "we're not alike at all. Can't you see the difference? He's black on the right, I'm black on the left." I think the best ST episodes throughout were the ones that used the setting of the future to step back and look at today's and tomorrow's problems in a new light. Yes, the fighting ones were good too, but the ones that made you afterwards go, hmmmm....they were the best.
Gay ? Wasn't there an TNG episode once that dealt in a way with sexuality and sexual orientation? I think it was episode 117 "The Outcast". Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
I would think that so far into the future, ailments such as aids and cancer would have been long since delt with. I mean how often do we hear people bringing up the plague these days? Not often because its not something we're particularily affected by in our day to day lives. Unless you have the plague... which I don't think you do. As for homosexuality, hey maybe people will get over their homophobia on a large scale and it won't be such a taboo. I mean if its no longer socially frowned upon in their time, then why would the issue even be brought up?
Or maybe u need a gf/bf ;-D j/k bro Anyways, Data had sex, several times even...so... And I think they don't talk about homosexuality because they have more problems *Edit* Please don't repeat things like that.
You can say it, just rephrase what you said. Try to actually make a point and not say something random about lesbians.
This whole thread has revolved around homosexuality and sexuality in general on startrek, I stated that I wanted to see more of that particular subject. Not random but relevant to the topic. I also made a comment about the way they seem to have no problems with interspecies relationships (also relevant to the topic), was it the word I used that offended you?
The way you said DC, thats all. You could of said it any other way, and you just did. Just don't say it like that.
interspecies relationships are mentioned a couple of times. but i got the feeling that most of the species were "compatable" wich seems unrealistic to me. but how would i know what realistic is for 24th century space aliens.
