If anybody is using it, should I bother to update?

According to this test, not much difference....

I don't do enough nitty-gritty stuff on this Vista SP2 machine to feel the difference between now and when it was SP1, but that just means I haven't tried to install something on SP2 that didn't work on SP1. Do it, the folks at Microsoft probably sweat bullets making SP2 after the initial shunning of Vista, and probably has gotten a great deal of care in it's development.
 
Well, since I have automatic updates, shouldn't Vista do it itself (sooner or later)?
 
God damn vista. It downloaded automatically startes a download and I ended up with 5 gigs of bs on my PC because it started downloading ALL language packs :( I can't figure out how to get rid of them either :(

I'm going to move to Win7 as soon as it comes out. I just hate Vista. It just doens't work for me...

Win 7 is definitely more stupid user friendly. It's minimized, you have to be smart to turn stuff on, not turn it off like in Vista. (like configuring windows update, which takes like 30 seconds.).

I don't know, I just don't like it. And, I didn't have the option of XP ... AND, I was told if I put XP on the machine it would invalidate the warranty :( for some reason Vista and I just don't get along very well.... :bawl:
 
wait for Windows 7; better yet if you own a mac, get the new Snow Leopard, from the looks of it, seems to be waay faster than the current one.

I thought I was on topic ... read before semi-colon ... seems to be clear enough, relax dude; been on this forum for 7+ yrs, so I know a thing or two about replying I suppose, off course I am not as smart as you are :) ... But the bright side is that I am willing to learn.

Service Packs don't just add functionality, they bugfix, tweak and deal with security issues too. So to not bother with an update will leave you open to exploitation in theory. (although saying that about a windows system is inevitable)
 
OK, I will ask again, wouldn't it update automaticly eventually even if I don't want it to? Or updates are just small fixes and a SP is a major overhaul, left to the discretion of the user?
 
Its up to you (left to the discretion of the user). SP is an "update" release not a minor patch with fixes. (It is NOT a major overhaul, that would be a new "release" altogether), we are playing with terminology here, but yes, you can choose to skip Service packs completely, even though Windows would complain.

I mean if you don't wanna get the new Windows 7 (cost factor?), I'd recommend updating to the new service pack, otherwise skip it; why bother when you can have a "much much" better OS at hand (it really is, I have been testing it for some time now, very stable, pretty quick ... best OS from Msft in a long time IMHO).

Again, you misspoke. The correct answer (I looked it up) was that eventually the automatic update feature would update to SP2, so I might as well do it now and I did it.

Why would I get it unless they really want it to give me for free? It takes me to the same internet. The laptop is rather new, I hate to learn new things and it is a hassle to update. I haven't even learnt the features of Vista yet, I will just eventually skip it when I get a new computer with 7.

Now after updating to SP2 it seems the speed has increased, so that is a plus and looks like it was worth it...
 
You can choose not to receive updates by turning OFF the auto-updates and selecting do a manual update.

darn ... Anyways, as I said, ITS UPTO YOU. I personally think Vista to Windows 7 is NO learning curve whatsoever.

What can I say, I have learnt enough things for life, young people can enjoy the learning process.. :)
 
Vista HP was on my machine when I bought it and the pc did straqnge things, and would not let me delete certain safe deletable items. SP2 came out and it is much more solid.

I down loaded SP2, and am so ignorant about that I do know if I too have 5 gigs of junk. How do you tell?

Only thing I have noticed after down loading SP2 was that sites that somehow recognized my computer failed to do so. Most do now but Sicforums makes me log on now first time I visit after a power turn on (after every power turn on) even with the "remember me" box checked. This could be a Sciforums change that just happened after I down loaded SP2, but that would be strange chance.

Also while here instead of new thread, any clomments on MS's new free anti- everything bad? I now have anti-avast + Spy doctor, but do not like it. It tells me I have many low problem "infections" and to get rid of them I must buy the upgrade. Frankly I think they are just making that up as about 100 are tracking cookies and I ran "disk cleanup" to eliminate all cookies and there was no change in the number of "infected" cookies.
