As most of you know, my mother passed away Tuesday. Since, my father and I have been trying to figure out her password on the computer with no luck. She has Windows Vista Home Edition.

Is there anyway to get past this and into her account? She's got a lot of stuff on there that we need.

Its the actual computer password we need. I know if I were to access the Admin account I could probably reset the password, but the problem is is that hers is the admin account, and the only account on that computer.

All I can suggest is you find a hacker to break in.

Do you know any of her other passwords online? Many people keep the same ones.

easy. go into safemode from DOS. When you first start computer press and hold "f8" and choose safemode mode in there, once in windows go to the menu on windows and reset admin password there.

I broke into my mom's vista laptop one time. It required that I download a program onto CD that will reset the password to the null state.

Just do a google search... I can't remember the name of the program.

Maybe she wrote her password in her note pad? And try your birth date, many women that i know use their kids birthdates as passwords.

Well first off you should take into consideration if she was a security minded technologist or not.

To be honest most people in their late 40's or older tend to use easy to remember passwords, in fact they can even use the password with other services to. Such things are A siblings birthdate, weddingdate, perhaps a mergence of siblings names, or a pet name etc.

You should also check to see if it was left blank (if you haven't already)

Failing that you might want to look for a "password recovery disk". There might well have been on created, and this would save alot of time and effort (as well as lessening the chances of loss of data)

The only other option is to get hold of a VISTA HOME INSTALL DVD. This should allow you to RESTORE or RECOVER your account. Obviously if the copy you have is an OEM, then you'll likely not have a disc sitting around which will either mean getting a copy (risky if online), borrow from a friend or just buy a copy. Buying a copy should be okay if you have the money since the HOME edition is at the cheaper end of the spectrum.

By all means look for other ways on the internet, but other ways can't guarantee pulling your data off. (Just hope your drive was a FAT32 partition, if that's the case you should be able to copy your files off with no real issues by using a live distro disc or something along that line)

there is still ways to lock people out. just encrypt you files individually with different passwords on any data you want kept sacred.

If it was a desktop, there's always the option of removing the harddrive and installing it on a computer you have administrative priviledges on.

For what it's worth, sorry about your mom. I've just seen the threads in the About The Members subforum.
