Do you really WANT us to make contact?

Great OP & thread, but unfortunately not in the least realistic. I state unrealistic because the OP assumes too much about interacting with an alien race of beings.

There is no question that technology exists that the above average technologically knowledgeable human being knows nothing about. We see proof of this in videos and photographs that can't be debunked after intense scrutiny on an almost daily basis these days.

That in and of itself does not mean that these things are becoming more frequent or more common. It means that our progress as a species is catching up to them in the sense that mass communication and documentation means have greatly increased in the last 50 years.

Aliens have ALWAYS "been here" as much as they care, or possibly even can, be here. To believe that they are in any way "humanly comparable" or even remotely compatible, is a fictitious stretch of the imagination.

When curiosities like this arise it's constantly the work of "projection". It's highly unrealistic to believe that we can project qualities observed within living organisms found within the exclusive dimension we occupy in this universe, let alone our human social characteristics of developmental psychology and conquest, onto beings that quite possibly have been cohabiting with us here for many years, possibly even predating human existence as we understand it.

This is the unfortunate problem of traditional scientific investigation. It always starts with us at the center and works outward because it considers us the ultimate point of reference. That's precisely why most all the scientific giants of out time preach faith before fact. Too often faith is something likened to religion when in reality it's really a skilled discipline.

I still have a question about the utopian belief that aliens would be peaceful in contact with us.

I am all for exploration, but as to turning on massive search lights to attract attention from other alien races, it kinds of reminds me of when our Third Platoon Leader was lost and turned on his search light to have us give him a bearing, all I could hear were attack helicopters from the OPFOR descending on His position, so why should any alien race be any less aggressive opportunist than we Humans?

I agree. I fear that they will be too much like us.

It really depends if there is anything to make contact with. Currently it just looks like a bunch of dead rocks trapped in orbits around star's of varying ages.

If there was to be "Extra-Terrestrials" and *IF* their technology was the same or greater than our own, then what would have to be done to find them is to look for a universal location of "Scientific Interest". While other star systems and planets might well be interesting to us, there is going to be a lot of them, so you would have to look for star systems with multiple stars.

Yes. Extremely Prejudiced. Aliens at least have cool weapons and pose a challenge. Zombies are the same all over.

It would probably promote our unity, not harm it.

It wouldn't damage human culture. It would simply result in a paradigm shift, which we humans have gone through before. If there *are* other species in the universe, then that is the natural way of the world and therefore it is also natural that we one day find each other, instead of living in isolation. It would only be damaging to those who refuse to move forward, due to their inherent need to feel like the world revolves around them or their species. And who cares about their wishes? Those people are deluded... They abhor reality, and they will never evolve. They don't want to.

They will come and eat us

and if we are indigestible they will come and step on us

if they are tiny they will come and infect us

either way, they are coming to get us

Well, we know that their understanding of physics will be the same, hence they will have the same issues with gravity, relativity, etc. They most likely will have a form of mathematics to understand those concepts. We know they will have probably went through evolution much as we did with variations.

We actually would know quite a bit about them.

Pffft. Yeah, maybe they'll try to indoctrinate us into their cults?

John Lear, also thinks there is a breathable atmosphere on the dark side of the moon. That Venus is paradise and that when we die, our "soul" gets sucked into some machine on the moon and recycled down to earth after a while.

But if scientific facts (such as the existence of extra-terrestrial life) are damaging to a particular culture/viewpoint, should we deprive the rest of the world of this knowledge and potential benefits just to shield that culture?
