What does it do? I seem to have this thing installed because it must have come up as an automatic update as part of WinXP. But the thing is huge and now I’m being pestered by the automatic update about further .NET updates.

I run WinXP on a home desktop. I do word processing, web surf, MS Office applications, image manipulation, watch movies and play games. In other words, all the usual home stuff. I don’t do any programming, web application development, database work or any of the stuff that is mentioned on the wiki page for .NET.

So can I uninstall it and forget about it?

    Thanks.

You need the .NET framework to run programs that were written using it, just like needing the Java Runtime Environment to run java apps, or the flash player to view flash based websites.

Loads of windows applications are written to run on it, so you probably want it.

Don't delete it, you need it for some windows applications.

In nutshell, the .net framework is a library of updated windows code. The wiki actually describes it the best

Yes, you should download it all the way to the latest version (it's currently at 3.something). It's needed so that newer programs will function properly.

The framework is especially useful if you're a programmer. It includes tons of shortcut methods/functions/etc for getting stuff done. I'm loving it so far.

You most certainly shouldn't remove it.

In fact, you should probably go ahead and make sure it's completely updated.

I would post a link, but I only have 4 posts.
