What do people think of Facebook, myspace or what ever other virtual communities like those?

    Idiotic? exploitive? beneficial? etc...

It depends on how you use them. There have been incidences of 40-year-old perverts looking for 14-year-old girls. So it can definitely be dangerous if the proper precautions aren't taken. Some people take it way too seriously and in that case, they're being idiotic. Then again, it appears as though a lot of people take SciForums.com too seriously.

I have a MySpace page. I keep my profile private, which means that my personal information and photos can only be accessed by my approved friends. Keeping it public may be dangerous. Sometimes friends leave you public comments saying stuff, such as "Are we gonna be at the stingray bar tonight?" Last thing I need is some random MySpace weirdo showing up and stalking me.

Overall, I have found it beneficial because I got in touch with so many old friends. In the past 6 years, I've moved to 3 different parts of the country (NY to FL to CA), so I like having such an easy way to stay in touch with my friends in these three corners of the USA to see how they are progressing through life.

Waste of time. Socialising is much more real in person.

Agreed 100%. But if you've moved around a lot and really hate talking on the phone (as I do), it is a simple and fairly effective way to stay in touch.

Even so, It's easy to become addictive and pretend that the connections made (through friends of a friend) are real.

I guess it depends on your personality. My connections are only made in person. As far as it becoming addictive... I'm on Sciforums a hell of a lot more than I'm on MySpace now.

    I use facebook.

My main occupation on there is looking at and putting up pictures.
