Anyway, that approach would be extremely tedious. I advise you instead to find out who has an admiration for the movie that ends with the main character saying these lines: I have to believe in a world outside my own mind. I have to believe that my actions still have meaning. Even if I can't remember them. I have to believe that when my eyes are closed, the world's still here. Do I believe the world's still here? Is it still out there? Yeah. We all need memories to remind ourselves who we are. I'm no different. I believe John99 already knows the name of the movie; I'm not sure if he figured it out from the previous line I put up or if he simply saw the movie title which I had briefly put up in this very thread.
The following lines, from the same movie, have made me cry many times: I don't even know how long she's been gone. It's like I've woken up in bed and she's not here... ...because she's gone to the bathroom or something. But somehow I just... I just know she's never gonna come back to bed. If I could just... ...reach over and touch her side of the bed... ...I would know that it was cold. But I can't. The woman the man is talking about was his wife. The man has suffered a blow to the head at a point in time very close to when his wife was allegedly killed and this is what has apparently caused his retrograde amnesia (a true condition). I use allegedly not because I'm trying to withhold information but because even I'm not sure; there are some scenes which cast doubt on his version of events. Ever since then, he allegedly can't make new memories, although anyone who knows how retrograde amnesia works (from what I understand, it's something like Alzeimer's) knows that it's not 100%. Again, I say allegedly because it seems that there is one thing that he -does- remember. For instance, he believes that he remembers his wife dying- but his wife apparently died -after- he was hit in the head. While the time span between him being hit in the head and his wife dying is brief in his version of events, and one might conclude that the retrograde amnesia hadn't yet settled in, it's not so in the version of someone else. Anyway, I'm theorizing here, but I believe I know why he can't metaphorically reach over. Anyone care to theorize on why he can't do so?
The movie would be, 'What Dreams May Come' and that would make my guess, Stryder. And I believe he can't let go because he is bound by what is, and doesn't realize that we make each moment.
That too was an excellent movie. I particularly loved the idea of rescuing someone from Hell. However, it's not the movie and I'm not Fraggle Rocker. My own answer was that he wants to reach over because he really does want to know whether his wife is there or not, and yet he doesn't want to reach over because in the end he knows that his wife is dead and reaching over will confirm that. But I believe your answer could be added on to the ending of it; he is too afraid to lose what deep down he knows he has already lost and is afraid to take the next step and make a new future. However, I believe he does haltingly make progress- one part of it actually runs backwards, which gives us a feel of his retrograde amnesia as well, while the other part runs forward; the movie ends when the part going backwards finally meets the part going forwards. I love the movie not so much for all the individual points in it, but rather for the metaphor. I believe it's an excellent play on the old adage that those who forget history are bound to repeat it; I personally believe that that adage has the most relevance in regards to wars and depletion of resources which can both cause so much suffering and which would definitely be in humanity's best interests to avoid. We never completely forget history and so there are variations, but I strongly believe that the sad parts that do repeat themselves are repeated because as a race we still haven't learned enough to avoid them.

I quickly realized that it was not Fraggle when you pointed out you weren't American, so I made another guess of Stryder. I did not know that was against the rules. See, I happen to believe that every moment is it's own singularity to be bound to other singularities in an infinite number of ways, and almost always never the same way twice. I don't believe that history repeats itself, in so much as humankind has the same drives and instincts that cause it to follow the same types of path from time to time. It never directly repeats. I find it interesting that when he lets go of what he thinks is real, that is when he finds her. A beautiful movie visually, and metaphorically.
Some more from my favourite movie when I'm feeling somewhat melancholy. The movie stars Guy Pearce as Leonard, as well as 2 actors who also star in the Matrix, Carrie-Anne Moss and Joe Pantoliano (Teddy): Teddy: Leonard, you have to be very careful. Leonard: Why? Teddy: You mentioned that maybe somebody was trying to set you up. Get you to kill the wrong guy. Leonard: I go on facts, not recommendations, but thank you. Teddy: Lenny, you can't trust a man's life to your little notes and pictures. Leonard: Why not? Teddy: Because your notes could be unreliable. Leonard: Memory's unreliable. Teddy: Oh, please. Leonard: No, really. Memory's not perfect, it's not even that good. Ask the police. Eyewitness testimony is unreliable. The cops don't catch a killer by sitting around remembering stuff. They collect facts and draw conclusions.... Facts, not memories. That's how you investigate. I know, it's what I used to do. Memory can change the shape of a room, it can change the colour of a car. And memories can be distorted. They're an interpretation, not a record. And they're irrelevant if you have the facts.

Yeah, I agree. I have been rather fervently trying to prevent a certain type of repetition but deep down I believe the real work I have to do is internal. The problem is that internal work is frequently so much harder then external work. Robin Williams undergoes the same transformation in Pan, you may remember. While there are limits to how much one's beliefs can alter one's reality, I certainly don't discount its power. Yeah.

Memento is a phenomenal movie as well. I've never seen everyone not speak as they left a theater in quite the same way. I went to see it alone, and wished I had had someone to ride home with that night just for the conversations. We all make our own realities, so being a pan isn't so difficult at all. But some of us have responsibilities that won't allow us the pleasure. I haven't played this game before... scott3x?

I have made it a point to -never- go to a movie theater with the intention of seeing a movie alone, although it has happened twice due to unforeseen circumstances; in one I can't even remember the movie, the other was Edward Scissorhands with Johnny Depp, another excellent movie (I had been prevented from seeing The Silence of the Lambs, yet another excellent movie, although I'm generally not a fan of the scary movies).
