M*W: I'm curious as to your meaning of the name "Jesus" meaning "God is salvation." Can you provide some back-up documentation on this? The name "Jesus" comes from the Greek "Ieosus."

Yeah, they're basically, "Cake or Death".
Because the central tenet to all Abrahamic faiths is religious exclusivity via monotheism and what they purport to be revealed gnosis.

    John 3
17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

    John 14
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

    Luke 10
16 He who hears you hears Me, he who rejects you rejects Me, and he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.”

    Only among idiots

    No.

More specifically, that fixation is the result of centuries of degradation of the Christian idyll. Evangelical fundamentalists who rely on that sort of assertion do so because it is suited to their intellects.

    My source.

The name Jesus (Gr., I‧e‧sous′) corresponds to the Hebrew name Jeshua (or, in fuller form, Jehoshua), meaning “ Jah Is Salvation.” The name itself was not unusual, many men being so named in that period. For this reason persons often added further identification, saying, “Jesus the Nazarene.”

I can not Vouch for the validity of this site other than the statement of name meaning.

M*W: Okay, I've read that, but why does the bible say Jesus willl be called "Immanuel" which means "god is with us?"

Why are you trusting the Bible as a source?

    Adstar,

"Condemned" in these contexts mean "judged", not being sent to hell.

None of these leads me to believe hell-fire awaits those for not believing in him.
How do you get to this conclusion?

A note for Jan and Adstar: Gospel of Matthew

A Note for Adstar and Jan Ardena

    Matthew 25 suffices for most:

"When the Son of man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, and he will place the sheep at his right hand, but the goats at the left. Then the King will say to those at his right hand, 'Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see thee hungry and feed thee, or thirsty and give thee drink? And when did we see thee a stranger and welcome thee, or naked and clothe thee? And when did we see thee sick or in prison and visit thee?' And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.' Then he will say to those at his left hand, 'Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.' Then they also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see thee hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to thee?' Then he will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.' And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

This seems to be more of a judgement based on morality rather than the "accept Jesus died for your sins or face eternal hell"...is there any scripture that has Jesus clearly stating "I came to atone for your sins" ?
    I have found none.

Nice. This is why I have compared God to nothing but a two-bit dictator.

No matter how you look at it (unless you're retarded), any deity that subjects his creations to eternal damnation in hell for the simple fact they did not accept him as their savior is NOT a merciful deity.

And IMO, any deity that isn't merciful and would send his greatest creations to hell like that, doesn't deserve any respect.

Did any of you ask to be born? I know I didnt'. I think it's pretty shitty to be thrust into a 'deal' like this.
It's kinda like being drafted in the military. None of the draftees asked for military service.

If god does indeed exist, I'll take my chances in hell. From the way god seems to run heaven, hell doesn't seem much different.

I'm sorry but all this stuff, the whole doctrine, just sounds like primitive men motivating primitive, uneducated people with fear.

The Bible claims that Jesus is god.
Have you never heard 'I and my father are one'. ?

John 10:30 I and my Father are one.
