Lately, my dreams all seem to involve weird pieces of text, either that or lyrics. Is there any way I could learn to retain them after waking, 'cause I would love to remember them....? Lucid dreaming techniques or something??

For a long time almost all my dreams were really violent. I mean like setting a live person on fire and watching their face melt off violent. Sometimes they were so vivid and bad I remember trying to wake myself up .

I recently read a theory that said only one side of your brain dreams. Not the side where language is processed. That is why it's difficult to remember dreams, they aren't coded to remember.

I have those too. I had one where I was fighting these guys who attacked me with samurai swords, and I opened one of them up and the wound splayed open so wide I could see his intestines.

I really want to remember stuff from the ones I've been having lately, though. I had one where my brain somehow generated a song that I'd never heard in real life, twas kind of Cyanotic-ish but slower. I remember that the lyrics were really trippy, but I can't actually remember words, which is annoying, I'd love to actually record that song in real life.

I think you just have to take some time when you wake up and try to remember. However I find that words fail to capture the spirit/feelings of the dream. That's because it's not the language centers that are dreaming.

Text will be gobbledygook in a dream. It is a method of lucid dreaming to really look at text and try to make out the words... if it is just garbled garbage that doesn't form words, you know your dreaming, and you can then attempt to shape the dream to your liking.

If you want to remember your dream, you can tell yourself to remember this when you wake up... of course you have to realize you are dreaming to do so. Also you could keep a pen and paper within reach and make it a habit, when you wake up, to write down everything you remember about the dream before it dissolves... but it can dissolve fast. It is very frustrating... I imagine that is a small taste of how people who suffer from alzheimer's feel.

I already keep a dream diary, 'cause I have a huge fascination with REM sleep.

It was definitely a lyric that had meaning. It was a weird one about life force and sex and impulses and stuff. But I can only remember that abstractly, I couldn't actually quote a line from it.

As you are waking up, try to replay the dream in your head a few times, and then get up and write it down in your dream journal. Replay the dream as often as you can throughout the day. As time passes, you may get a little better at retaining them, but not much. Often times in dreams, what we think is trippy lyrics or a dark poem or some form of text is not actually anything at all except for mumbo jumbo, it is the feeling that our sleeping brain produces in response to mumbo jumbo. The dream theme is that we are reading something cool or hearing a song with dark lyrics, but in reality, it is only the sensation that we get when we experience these things in real life that is being experienced in the dream.
I know the feeling very well though VI. I often have dreams that I am reading something really cool, or hearing some really awesome lyrics, but upon awakening, I can't even recall on WORD! I always wish I could cause the feeling I got from it in the dream was so awesome.

I found out how to control my dreams at the age of 15. And ever since then I have had the most incredible dreams..... Have you ever had a flashback in a dream to another dream or experinced a deja view in a dream?
The thing to do when you are dreaming is to remember what you know normally can do in real life. I myself had my awakening in the dream world when I was in one of those dreams where you run form something/someone. I just thought.... wait a minut, I know teak kwon do and then I turned around and kicked the one running after me in the head.

I try not to think about my dreams, then they usually just pop into my head throughout the day.

Perhaps your dreams should not be remembered because they are to upsetting or grotesque for your conscience mind to stand. They could also be to sad or frightening as well.

I often have flashbacks in dreams to other dreams! In fact my dreams have taken on a reality of their own, where all they are is one long continuing plot. Like I'm living a second life. There are constant references to other dreams, even dreams that I had as a kid.

    That is just wrong!
If you have anything that is too upsetting/grotesque/sad/frightening for your conciouness to handle..... you have to upgrade your conciouness

I have the flashback thing too. I also sometimes forget one of my dreams then remember it about a week later.

This is pretty much spot on VI. You'll find the majority of things you vaguely remember from your dreams actually don't make much sense at all. However there are almost always small portions that do(providing you can remember them). I think this is mostly down to the concept that eventually some small part will accidentally fall in the right order(think monkeys, typewriters, and shakespeare).

One thing I will say is that recall comes with practice so be patient. It's much like remembering your childhood, much of the memories have been deemed unneccessary and 'forgotten'.
