A good number of New Zealander junior high students I heard cant even place where their country is on the map. Of course the japanese are bloody geniuses compared to everyone. Many just try harder.
ok, one source said 11% couldn't find the USA, THEIR OWN COUNTRY, on the map. I wouldn't be surprised if this poll was mostly conducted at poor areas...where maps are scarce, or they would poll college students when they are drunk off their asses or deprived of sleep for a week. My education never had a unit on locating countries around the world, we learned where countries are when we had to...such as for World War 2, we learned most of modern Europe. Through experience, I have been taught and tested on more old maps (pre-WW1....Middle-Ages....Roman era) than current ones. And the middle-east? Unless I hadn't taken a special elective, I wouldn't have been taught that, but even without formal classes...I knew where Iraq was. I couldn't draw a map of the middle-east but I could use common sense to locate Isreal, Afghanistan...and others. And geography of Africa....forget it, I might be able to get the northern area and South Africa but I would be lost otherwise. Do Europeans/Australians know the geography of Africa? I was just wondering...not to start an argument.

Just say "No" Cocaine. Most definitely. Has coke fingerprints all over it. Incidentally, cocaine is also responsible for American difficulty with logic, compassion, modesty, and ethics. We could not have won the Cold War without cocaine, but look at the damage it did. Incidentally, of American schools and the idiots who can't find the US on a map ... I know it sounds like a litany from me, but we just spent a billion dollars in Seattle on two sports arenas. I know our schools could use a couple billion, too, but part of the mentality that came from the coke economy is that you shouldn't "spend", but rather "invest". You can't make a dollar figure out of educational results, so ... there you go. Seriously--the overall result of the American conscience at least since the 1980s has been "this is your brain on drugs". Mostly cocaine. I can't explain the crystal meth thing. me if i really wanted 2 increase my post count, id be doing crap like this.
