    Hi.
You are all familar with my posts. I am not ignorant to some of what may seem intellectual. But I do have a question for once.

I was wondering what psychology is as I am applying for a degree in it, a masters degree as I had once said in one of my threads.

I think that psychology is the study of the mental processes and is similar to philosophy. That is my basic problem at the moment. What is psychology? The study of the human mind? Shit, I have a dummies book to psychology, have read all the idiots guides to philosophy, and understand well enough the dynamics of what could be psychology but can someone please enlighten me?

    What is psychology?
    I don't want to hear:

    1) Neurons firing in the brain produce chemicles which can heal or harm.
    2) Math.

Psychology is the study of human behavior. The most common careers for psychology majors are psychiatrists and psychologists.

Psychology is learning and understanding human behavior. How it is applied depends on whether you become Psychatrist (can prescribe Rx, applying method) and Psychologist (more research based I would say, cannot prescribe Rx). lol but im not sure, not a psychologist

Psychology is the study of the internal (i.e. the mind) and external (i.e. behaviour) facets of humans on both a micro (individual) and macro (societal) level. The discipline examines human action from the very first stage of cognition to the final stage of coping with subsequent behavioural outcomes.

Psychology isn't just about becoming a psychologist or psychiatrist, but can involve policy work, consultancy, coaching, and much more.

I have enjoyed every moment of my psychology studies and hope you do too, Sisyphus.

    Best Wishes,

    Nicola

Its a degree course that is taken by girls who have no idea what they really want to study at university, and don't want to work too hard at it.

    It has no commercial value

I have no background resume that I know of, none was given.
If anything I have had extensive experience with suffering and understand well things because of it.

Almost every definition quoted in Dictionary.com lists "the study of the mind" first, or words to that effect. A couple of them say "mind and behavior," but the others all put behavior in definition #2. Except for the ones that say "the study of the human soul." I think Carl Jung would have appreciated that, but it denies the discipline of animal psychology since the world's two dominant religions insist that humans are the only animals that have souls.

As for "most common careers," don't bet your pink slip on that. As I note below, a lot of people with psych degrees find other ways to make a living. I know three who work for a company that devises educational tests.
It's so cool to say shit like that, but to the miniscule extent that there's any truth to it, it's only in regard to the reputation of psychiatrists and psychotherapists. Psychology is extremely valuable in a variety of other disciplines, including business, police work and war. Many people with psych degrees don't even think about going into therapeutic or clinical psychology. They work with executives, cops, military officers, salesmen, software interface designers, etc.

Look at how the simple model of Maslow's Hierarchy helps us understand people's motivation as a function of what they've achieved. Maslow was a psychologist. Look at how Jung and his popularizer Joseph Campbell deconstructed religion, helping us as we try to figure out what to do about it. They were both psychologists.

In any case, it's sociologists you're thinking of. They coast through college taking all the easy psychology classes and all the easy anthropology classes.

They're the opposite of the chemical engineers, who have to take all the hardest chemistry classes and all the hardest engineering classes.
