Why is it when you scratch a cat's butt (at the base of the tail), they raise it up? Is it a universal cat thing or are my cats broken?

Your cats are just broken. Try using a arc welder.

J/k....I think all cats do that.

I long time ago I was interested to find out why my cat liked me better than my sister. I wondered if it was due to where I stroked her. I then noticed that if I stroked her butt (as you call it) then she would have to wash what ever was in front of her (as well as her back rising). Now the her having to lick/wash would always be the case she really didn't seem to have a choice in the matter. I would therefore do demonstration whereby I would get her to lick my shoes.

So there is something around the cats butt that triggers an automatic response.

That's what I want to know. Like if you scratch a dog a certain way, his foot starts thumping.

Its a spot on their body that they cannot reach to scratch themselves. So chances are it always itches for them on that spot.

I noticed that too. They also seem to have a spot that makes them burp when you scrath it. :bugeye:

In my experience it's universal. Never met a cat who didn't react that way, to the point now that it's become instinctive for me to do that.

As someone else suggested, this is part of their body that they can't reach with mouth or claw. Dogs are not as limber, they have a much larger area that they can't reach.

They can reach that area fine though.

It's universal for all cats and it's mild sexual stimulation.
