I know the price of gas have severely curtailed our weekend get-aways. We are now putting 10 yr old on a plane to NE because its so much cheaper than driving her there.

$3.39 a gal here. Diesel is about $.90 a gal more. Its got to be killing the farmers.

or you could move closer to work, like everyone else that does not have a armored farm somewhere far away, and keep the economy going, and we all survive. See the difference between a few lifestyle changes, one the on hand its last-man-standing, on the other hand we all come out of it better off, huuuummmm how selfish are you to risk it all because you want to have 4 kids, a huge SUV and live out in suburbia?

Mad, have you ever seen the plan of cambera?
Its REALLY well designed, it has one circular road which goes the whole way around parliment house and it looks like a MASSIVE roundabout. Of course this could cause problems if there is an acident but the traffic there always seems to flow so well, it is a small city though

That's where they'll live after having lost their homes to foreclosure.

I hear Bush may lose his ranch because dudes cannot afford the fees for his course on politics, deceipt , bullshit and scripts which start, " my fellow Americans, just look at the state of the nation. I blame those commie bastards in Cuba. "

So long as the economy keeps going, I should be able to afford the gas and not need to institute my "go to hell" plan. As far as moving closer to work, well, the damned Democrats are in charge there and taxes are too damned high! Not to mention the schools are shit, city services suck, and the crime rate is higher.

I live in the suburbs for all the reasons above. I can afford a beautiful house in the suburbs, with a big yard for the kids and pets. The taxes are low (Republicans in control), the schools are good, the crime rate is miniscule, the people are friendly. It's a great place to live.

Taxes would cost more then $10 a gallon? What city do you live next to because I find the city services great, the schools are good (depending on which you go to) and the crime is low (depending on the neighborhood) usually when I hear those complaints it's just cover speak for "Niggers and Spiks, Oh my!". I lived in the suburbs, or a leasts right next to it (I lived on a farm) I honestly can't say the suburbs are that great, although the culs-de-sac look nice, not much attention is given to hell hole trailer park next to it.

There is a lot of diversity in the US. My world is different than most of yours that post here. I live in a desirable subdivision in a small city. Yes, the subdivision is in the city. I can walk about two blocks in two different directions to several good walk-in restaurants, fast food restaurants and convenience stores. Larger stores such as supermarkets and a Wal-Mart supercenter are about a mile away. The subdivision was built with no high-traffic through streets, traffic is light (mostly only residents) and kids can, and do, ride their bikes all over the subdivision. The main entrance to the subdivision has a little higher traffic count and has bike lanes incorporated into the street. My vehicle is not a high-milage vehicle, but it does not matter because I drive very few miles per month as I am retired and everything is convenient and close by to me. My mortgage is paid off and I have no loans against my home. I am not wealthy, but I do have a very secure and adequate retirement income (not social security). I have always thought of myself as an average 'Joe American', but I am not the one often described in this subforum. Oh, and BTW, my neighbors are like me, but of various ethnic backgrounds. There is no room for new home construction in my subdivision and very few residents have sold their homes to new buyers over the years. It seems most of the problems are centered around large cities with few jobs for the inner-city poor and long commuting drives for the middle-income workers that live in the suburbs. The majority of Americans do not fall into that category, though.

In Latvia 1 gallon costs $6,29, the average salary is ~$850/m after taxes.

By the way, I live in the city centre and either walk everywhere or use public transport for longer trips.

One of our Aupairs (nannies) was from Latvia. The first time we took her to the grocery store and loaded up the truck with $300 worth of stuff she was shocked. She was used to going to the "market" every day and just buying a little bit.

My youngest son still likes vegetables more than anyone else in the family because the aupair from Latvia (Elona) fed him a ton of it as a toddler.

Well, yes, that's a huge sum of money to leave at a supermarket, there are people who earn that much a month after taxes (33%).
Nice to know that there was a Latvian girl in your household.

It's not far off $10 a gallon now in the uk and it's starting to have a real affect on how people spend.

Here in Canada we have more oil in the ground than the Middle East. You'd think Canadians would get a break. Not going to happen. We pay by the liter, right now it's around $1.07 per liter in Ontario which is about $4.80/gal. if my calcs are right(Cdn gal. slightly less than US gal). They say it's going to hit $1.30-40 this summer.

Because the government missed the boat years back and didn't build enough refineries, Canada actually sends the crude down to the Gulf refineries via an international pipeline just so we can buy it back as gasoline.

Maybe it's better than the alternative.....I wouldn't want to see the US Army and Panzer Corps if we told them they couldn't have any. Heheheh
