Has anyone got this card or is planning to get it .

I'm tossing up between a 8800 GT and this.

Well according to their benchmarking it's currently the 8800 GT however they did not the potential for variations of the 9600 in the future which might eventually out perform the 8800 GT.

For the most part it's all well dropping a top notch card into your computer, however if you aren't using the most recent OS and have the supporting peripherals then you might as well drop down the price range and look for something that matches the rest of your systems spec's.

Anyone looking at what else you can do with GPUs? But you need to be techno, i.e. a geek.

To an extent, but if he's gaming he's going to want a card that can push some polys above all else.

I haven't heard anything about the GF9 series of GPUs yet, but they're on the same 65nm die aperture as the 8xxx series (G92 cores) so I'd guess they can clock just as well, regardless of where the stock clockgen puts them.

 

I would wait for a little bit. AMD's rumored to pull a price drop on it's mid range cards thanks to the 9600s debut and nvidia might respond with something just as consumer friendly.

If you're not waiting, I'd go for the 8800GT with 512 memory.

 

I have a Raedon X 800 Pro for over a year now and it works perfectly. It is , however, only 256 Megs. The 512 Meg should be faster and better .

 

I don't know, I'd like a cheap solution, but if I can get a 512 MB 8800 GT, instead of a 9600, I will.

Which reminds me, what exactly does more memory mean ?

 

Memory as in a SDRAM ? That means instead of your processor doing all of the work it shifts part of that work into the SDRAM memory to help out and speed things up making the processor faster by doing so.

DDRAM Double Data Random Access Memory , sam as SDRAM only better.

 

Is it worth taking out my 7600 GT and installing the 8800 GT ? Or should I hold on to it some more ?.

 

Definitely worth it. The only question is if nvidia will provide a better 9 series option in the next couple of weeks. But as to whether or not you should upgrade from your 7 series? Definitely:

Wait until the next generation comes out which will be faster and better. It won't be to long before that happens.

 

update: my card just gave me random errors in game on freelancer. and that is a old game. Like 5 + years. I probably should get a new graphics card. even though I've only had this for 2 years.

 

What makes you sure it was your card that caused the error?

 

Sometimes you need updates on certain games in order for them to keep up with your system.

 

Not really, never happened on other games. all my games are updated and patched.

 

I would go for the fastest card you can afford. Graphics card is a very fast moving industry and has a life span of arund 6 month.

 

about RAM. 256 DDR3 memory is better then 512 DDR2 on the same model!

that is, a 8600GT with 256 DDRIII will perform better then a 8600GT with 512 DDRII, but not a 8800GT with 512 DDRII.

 

Never happened before with any other card, drivers updated. Removed and reconnected card, np, but then kept resurfacing.
