uhm ... the first requirement for people to participate is that they know about it
many people in my office, including myself, were totally unaware that an energy saving day had been declared

Priceless, I never heard of it.

And how committed is this Briton to cutting my environmental impact, .... I'm light green. I don't really give a shit about saving the planet for the sake of it, in fact, I'm suspicious of most peoples motivation, to be honest. Climate change is a huge problem for humans, and various other species, but it will not extinguish life on Earth. As I have no children, and no plans to have any, I'm not trying to save the planet to increase the longevity of the human race, because I have not invested in it. As something like 99% of the species ever to have existed are now extinct, a few more extinctions, of humans, polar bears etc does not really concern me in the long run. I'm not inclined to live like some hippie, have a compost toilet, never fly on a plane again, and go on cycle touring holidays and volunteer on an organic farming co-operative, BUT, I do plan to move to the country, and use solar, wind, and geo thermal energy where possible, and minimise my reliance on the energy producers. Then I can sit back, and it's just not my problem anymore. Not like it ever was, I've already done the most environmentally friendly thing possible, and annihilated a whole line of consumers stretching into the future, by simply not breeding. Remember the credo of environmentalism? The three R's? Reduce, Re-use, Recylce. Well, I reduced the human population.

what makes me very cynical about the whole exercise is this thing about "offsetting you carbon footprint" - especially when it comes from companies like Easyjet or Ryanair
