Pentagon: US IRAN Warboat encounter **IRAN RELEASES IT'S TAPE-UPDATE****

thelede.blogs.nytimes.com — According to the Pentagon and military observers, the audio of the incident, which included threats that American vessels "will explode", could be fake since it contains none of the expected background noise and chatter expected on naval transmissions in the area.

I think this comment on Bush's reaction says it best:

Why would he invent a hoax if it didn't give him an excuse to invade Iran?

It also could have been sent from shore.

Assuming the painfully obvious, that the small boat incident was used to determine USA capabilities, then it makes even more sense that Iran would send the message from land so as to determine if the USA can determine it's source. Then of course the USA would have to play dumb, "gee George, what's triangulation mean ... "

    it's all just a big game.l

Does anybody know of a present or past national, regional or local government anywhere in the world that governs more than a quarter million people without having a tendency to often be dishonest?

Spy vs Spy and lie Vs lie, Iran vs the USA, what's new?

definitly NOT howards goverment, they were built on lies. Of corse they eventually got there just reward. Maybe thats the problem, the US president can only run twice sp once you vote him in hes there for a set time and then if he is re elected he doesn't HAVE to care what anyone thinks anymore. If he had to run every 3 years and could run longer then he would have to be more accountable to the people

The Iranian video confirms the U.S. video, they were dammed close, to the U.S. ships, and the video show them taking footage of the antenna and radar structure, a intelligence gathering, and harassment mission, trying to get us to light up, but I'll bet they stayed under EMCOM.

Nobody is denying that the incident took place where Iranian speedboats were scouting the Navy ships, it's the whole "we're gonna blow you up" bit that we disagree on. The voice at the end doesn't even sound like any of the previous transmissions and that channel has all sorts of crap going through.

Greenwald on the mess at hand

Over at Salon.com, Glenn Greenwald posted a good overview of the controversy surrounding the so-called crisis:

There are, by Greenwald's telling, plenty of problems with the story we've been told:

One should not leap to the conclusion that Greenwald is taking the Iranians' side; far from it:

And he goes on, in an update to the post, to address issues raised by reader comments:

The whole story seems bizarre, and we would not, I think, be out of line to wonder if, sometime down the road, after we have either gone to war in Iran or not, after the Bush administration is done, perhaps after the future of the American republic is more clearly defined, we might hear from some of our Naval personnel, participants who feel used—exploited, even—by an executive determined to wag the dog until Fido's back breaks and tail snaps clean off. Or maybe we'll read a memoir that describes how the Iranian boats did behave in a threatening manner, and somehow that just wasn't good enough for Navy brass or the executive, and the situation was inexplicably exaggerated in such a perverse manner that, while the motivation might be easily guessed, the estimation of success will forever remain a mystery.

Maybe the administration really does want to see how far they can push it, as Jay Rosen (and, apparently, Jack Goldsmith) described—

—and finally hit the wall. While no larger force has necessarily checked the executive, it may simply be that they've pushed too far, become too recklessly casual, and could not realize that the story would not hold.Stay tuned: the Iran discussion is almost guaranteed to bring us even more bizarre tales before our next president is inaugurated.

Wow, this video is so fake it's disturbing. Who put out this video? Was it in the hands of the CIA prior to it being released? This sounds like some dude from Boston, trying to sound middle eastern. No wonder the Petagon has raised their doubts.

Someone in the U.S. government, is my understanding. The voice is included on video released by the U.S. military. The short clip appears to have been cut together by CNN.
