Vista: Is It Really That Bad?

Is it? Should I avoid it? Is there a way to avoid it?

I hate it. I think the biggest bottleneck is the fact that it's not compatible with a lot of old programs and hardware. It's also a serious resource hog.

Admittedly, I will say vista is a great Os for my grandma to use. She only uses her computer to surf the internet, and do a few odds/ends word processing tasks.

Buy a PC with XP, or just buy an XP install disc, format your hard drive with Vista on it and install XP.

 

I worked with it at a friends house the other day. It takes a little time to

get use to using it but I found it rather easy to adjust to. I wouldn't say it

is all that bad and that when they get the "bugs" worked out of it , it should

be just fine. I didn't find any bugs myself but others have complained about

stuff but Microsoft is sending updates all of the time to fix the bugs.

 

Depends I guess. I personally hate it for various reasons. It's a resource hog, introduces very little in terms of new (useful) features, comes with a ton of DRM built in (which slows everything down) and just has this arrogant "we know what's best" feel about it. They should have called it Windows Media Industry Edition, because about the only major change is the content restrictions they put in place to try and combat piracy.

If DX 10 doesn't make it to XP then I guess I'll have to switch at some point, I can only hope either someone is working on porting it to XP or making a "Vista Lite" that strips out all the useless stuff.

 

Vista isn't bad at all. If you keep all the crap user enhancements then you need a pretty fast system. For that reason i am sorry i put it on my laptop or i should have just bought a mac laptop. Microsoft went in the wrong direction for me.

 

Can't you put more RAM into it to speed it up? Or are you maxed out already?

 

I have vista 64.......I should be cool in a couple years when games...progs...etc catch up.....right now alot of software/hardware isnt compatable with 64 bit or even 32 bit for that matter

 

I've been running Vista 32 fine ever since it came out. Just make sure you have good enough hardware to support it and you'll be fine. Most software compatibility issues, unless the software vendor is small and un-supportive, have already been fixed or are in the process of being fixed. I've only had one software compatibility problem, with Diskeeper, and that was solved within a few weeks when they released a Vista version.

 

Vista is okay, I have it on my laptop. Most of the reason I like it is just because it looks nice. That transparent frame, how the exit, minimize, and maximize buttons glow when your cursor moves over them. Otherwise, it is not modding-friendly like Linux or Microsoft XP business edition. It really depends on what you are doing with your computer.

If it is just for a family that uses the computer to surf and do homework, then I would recommend it. If you are a h4ck3rzz for your operating system, or you do special computer works, then I would not recommend it.

 

Download from a torrent site and see if you like it.

You can even download a retail disc (its illegal) and test it out

If you like it go ahead and buy it.

 

I usually make a point of waiting a couple of years after release before moving to a new Microsoft OS, because that's how long they usually take to get it to work properly.

 

I hate Vista. I just bought a new laptop and it has Vista. It won't recognize my Seagate 120GB external hard drive that has over 7,000 songs on it. It has screwed up my itunes, the mail program sucks. I can't say enough bad things about Vista.

 

I don't get it... Why are you guys having problems with it? Is there a specific program that's not supported on Vista? I have Vista home premium on my laptop, And it's great. I use computers on a daily basis and all my programs are running fine with Vista; No compatibility issues what so ever.. Oh, and I also have external harddrives(two seagates), and even an external cd drive, everything works great. Maybe it's time to do a windows update?

 

I recieved a free copy of Vista when I purchased my laptop. The only reason I would have loaded it was for the look of it. Then I found and installed WindowsBlinds and Vista has yet to see the light of day.

my computer, my husbands and my childrens computers all have vista and we love it, it takes a little getting used to but its well worth the trying and effort.

 

Vista is very bad for not-so-up-to-date PCs; it will fuck up your computer if its not fast and powerfull enought. I personally would only trade XP Proff. for Vista if the computer is an awesome gamer´s PC.
They had a few laptops in my company that came from Dell with Vista installed, and they sucked, and continue sucking; the worst part is you can´t install XP on those; so they will continue to suck.
I have a laptop with XP, even if its Vista-enabled I would never go for that since it will slow it down considerably for sure.

I tried the beta version of Vista, and thought it was really slow. I just recently installed the retail version of Vista, and I like it. It fixed some of the 3d graphics problems I was having with xp (fried textures in games). If it wasn't for that, I probably would still be using xp.

 

Incredibly devious trick...obviously a deal worked out between MS and the laptop manufacturers.

My computer tech hates Vista because it will go into your drive and start removing programs it *thinks* you dont need.

I dont want an OS that thinks!
