After reading Lucifer Angel's thread about her daughter and what to in expect in court, I was wondering what do you people think about bartering and deals, like reduced sentences for information, etc? (I know not related to that topic though)

Do you think it's wrong, and a crime is a crime and deserves the same punishment whatever, or is it necessary for justice to be dealt? (No matter if the prisons are full)

I personally don't mind so much about deals, but I don't like the idea of people getting shorter sentences and being released earlier just because our prison system is overloaded.

i know reductions are sometimes made because of capacity but i think the thing youre talking about is when a prisoner is asked to give four names of his partners in crime and he goes free or whatever?
if they were just letting them out for capacity reasons why would they find out information about more people to arrest?

whther its right or not i dunno. but i don't mind to much as long as they put the released on parole for a while or something.

No no no, you got confused, I'm talking about 2 seperate reasons for justice not being met. Full prisons, or other logistical reasons, OR bartering, and gaining a deal.

Do you think its OK, and acceptable, and how does it make it less of a crime if you provide information?

There is a thing called making a plea agreement.

"A plea bargain (also plea agreement, plea deal or copping a plea) is an agreement in a criminal case in which a prosecutor and a defendant arrange to

settle the case against the defendant. The defendant agrees to plead guilty (and often allocute) or no contest and in some cases to also provide

testimony against another person in exchange for some agreement from the prosecutor as to the punishment. A plea bargain can also include the

prosecutor agreeing to charge a lesser crime (also called reducing the charges), and dismissing some of the charges against the defendant. In most cases,

a plea bargain is used to reduce jail sentence time or fines associated to the crime being charged with."

Yeah I know what it is, just wondering what people think about it. Anyone against it, or is it widely accepted as necessary by everyone.

I've never heard anyone say that makes it "less of a crime."

But you should also be aware that it often saves TONS of expenses and man-hours that the police would otherwise have had to spend on investigations and finding evidence! That alone makes it worth it.

It is the law. You can't be against the law or you are a law breaker!

I know it doesn't make it less of a crime but it does shift the punishment fitting the crime idea.

And yeah its extremely practical in saving man-hours, and thats why I'm OK with it, its a good compromise.
