There are a couple of possibilities but I just wanted to back up a few 100s pictures and was trying to do it in the simplest way. I ended up using an USB device because it was faster than setting up the network.

But really, what would be the simplest way to do the transfer?

    1. Crossover cable connection between the computers. Network setup still needed.
    2. Connection via hub. Network is needed.
    3. Saving to a portable device (USB, CD) and transfering it manually.
    4. Using a male-male USB cable. You need to buy one, not that cheap...
    etc.?

Edit: Well, one extra question would be here is: why can't I just use a 2nd computer as a USB storage, and save data on it quickly when connected directly, why do I need to set up a network? (if my understanding is correct) I thought i just make the direct connection and the data would flow....

the following method only requires the HDD that has the pictures (or any file of any size) you wish to transfer.

    turn off the computer.
set the jumper to slave and remove the cover to the computer.
plug the IDE ribbon cable into the back of the HDD.
plug in the power connector to the HDD.
position the HDD so it doesn't ground on anything, you may even slide it into an open bay.
    power up the machine.
    open windows explorer.
create a folder on the c drive that will hold the file(s).
select all the files you wish to transfer.
drag them, kicking and screaming, to their new home.
    turn off the machine.
    remove the HDD.
    replace the computer cover.

Linux, yeah, I am going to install it, right just for a simple data transfer.. But yes, I used the USB stick method. I am just surprised there is no easier way in the 21st century....

easiest way is to network..but I am sure you already knew that. once you network them..a whole plethora of possibilities shows up like this nifty little progam out on sourceforge which allows you to use 2 computers and monitors but one keyboard and mouse and using tcpip you can just cut from one desktop and paste to the other...god I wish I could remember the name of it....

frankly it would have helped to know what he had the pictures stored on.
but alas he never mentions it.
i just assumed it was a hard drive.

Most computers these days have ethernet ports built in. Then, all you need is a cheap cable, and you have a network.

It is. And networking is not the SIMPLEST way. The simplest way is the male to male USB device with the built in software, mentioned earlier. You just hook it up and with little windows opening up on both computers you just drag and drop the files.
    But it costs $60.

I don't necessery want to set up a network and shared files just to transfer occasionally a few 100s pictures.... Also you need the inverse cable, that might not be around...

whats easier than taking a 20 dollar router and plugging two cables up to it? and you dont have to share..you can ftp..you can use Synergy (as was stated above)..you COULD share a directory I suppose. maybe Im just a little bias though, but I never found anything easier...

Nothing cooler than scrolling your mouse over three monitors..one with windows...one linux..and one solaris..or mac (not sure if it works with mac since I never tried it, but dont know why it wouldnt)...and being able to cut and paste across desktops with no problem.

With the router I still have to network the computers... But as I mentioned I ended up using USB sticks and a 1 Giga can be had for $12 or so...

I use the 4 Gig Ironkey... but that's only because I'm paranoid.

I'm curious how you would reconnect the current (an honest question).

I'd like to see you try a physical attack.

This thing is so badass. It's heavier than most USB drives because of the metal casing and epoxy filling.
