i have been trying to install a hdd hitachi deskstar 250gb as a slave to hitachi deskstar 400gb. when the slave is not present everything is okay. when i plug the slave in i cant boot an os. system returns message "no os found" under linux install "disk error 21" ??i think?? i never took a note of message from linux boot.

the jumpers are set as described on the hdd's.
any ideas what is going wrong??

the jumper for master is set as dev0 master
the jumper for slave is set as dev1 slave.

    any help appreciated. tnx

Check the boot order in your bios setup.

set the jumpers on both to 'cable select' as it is most likely a conflict where the cable is trying to register your slave as master. after that it should be simple enough to set the boot order in your bios to boot from your 400gb first, regardless of whether it is master or slave.

Don't know what the hdd bit means but I always put my jumpers on the top shelf in my wardrobe. It keeps them out of the way but they're still readily accessible when the cold nights draw in.

lol...red, you so funny...that would be hard disk drive.

I personally keep my jumpers on the top of buildings...very tall buildings...that way they make a good splat when they land.

I wonder if Ellion got his problem fixed.

    no, still struggling,

have set different configurations in my bios and also tried setting all jumpers to cable select. no joy. both hdd have bootable os on, but i get the message no os found.
in my bios i have bootmanage UNDI PXE-2.0
this is also sending error message on some configurations.

Have you tried a "Disk adjustment tool" (a hammer) ?

    j/k

If both drives will boot when they are attached by themselves...then I don't know what could be the issue.

Maybe the Jedi-master might be able to help.

it is strange, i figured bootmanage UNDI pxe-2.0 is for network boot, so i have disabled that. also if i plug both hdd in and boot a live linux cd i can access, read and write to both hdd just cant boot either.

sounds like a problem with your boot loader.

I can't help you with this, but in case someone comes along who can help, could you please tell us whether you're putting both drives on the same cable in the same IDE slot (the physical connection on your mother board) or if it's different slots?

Also, if you're using 2 different cables, could you tell us whether they are connected to the middle or the end (the IDE cable has 2 places where you can connect the drives, the middle and the end).

It's been quite a while since I've connected extra IDE drives (such as extra hard drives or optical drives), but I seem to remember that the order in which you connect the drives and where you connect them is just as important as the jumper settings. Maybe, if they're on the same cable, you could swap the slave and master (connect them to different parts of the cable) and see if that works?

problem solved. hitachi have two settings for a master drive one for single master and one setting for master with slave. "dev0 master" and "forcing dev1 present" "forcing dev1 present" is for master with slave.
