Does it kill brain cells throughout your life if you smoke? Doesn't it deprive your brain of oxygen and promote tumor growth in the brain?

That's because nicotine improves concentration and then impairs it. Someone who has just had a cigarette can concentrate better than the average non-smoker but once the nicotine is gone the body craves it and concentration decreases below baseline. It's not that the lack of oxygen is harming brain cells (people don't hold smoke that long--it's not like smoking pot where you try to keep it in as long as you can).

No animal rights terrorist organization person nine smoking does not kill brain cells because thats a retarded oversimplification.

The affects of smoking on the brain can cause changes in memory, alertness, muscle movement, respiration, and heart rate. Smoking also releases dopamine in the brain similar to what cocaine does and is more addictive than pretty much every drug out there.

I suggest you research it yourself so you can see all the fancy pants medical terms I tried to leave out.

the latest research according to one publication says that it does kill brain cells and stops new ones from forming. I don't know how damaging it is though longterm.

Show me the research which states it does not kill brain cells or do you not know what you are talking about?

No--that's not what I said. I said nicotine (wouldn't matter how you get it--gum, cigarette, patch) temporarily increases concentration--for a cigarette smoker that lasts a few minutes. Then, after it wears off, the person's ability to concentrate drops BELOW baseline (lower than it would have been before he smoked the cigarette). If you're really interested I can give you the literature on it.

Drugs do have beneficial effects--which is why people often start taking them. For instance, amphetamine will raise your IQ by about 5 points when you're on it. Of course, this is not worth the trade off in terms of negative effects over the long term.

I think the burden of proof here is on you to produce a piece of research that says smoking does kill brain cells. I'm aware of research showing that it inhibits certain types of neuron activity and may produce some lasting (although not permenant) changes in neruotransmitter levels but I am unaware of any studies showing it permanently destroys brain cells. It has been a few years since I did any work on nicotine/smoking so there may be something new, but I haven't seen it.

It's interesting--I'll try and get a copy of the article. Note that it is IV nicotine they're using not tobacco, so the effect results from the nicotine. Not sure if the method of delivery alters anything. I'm also not sure how great an effect it would have on humans--I'd bet that alcohol kills more brain cells but you don't see a noticable effect with that unless the person has been drinking a lot of an extended period.

For someone who's putting forth questions on a maturity level generally reserved for children I doubt you'd be able to tell if I was putting you on.

It's up to you and your Google-fu to show that smoking somehow prevents cell growth in the brain anyway.

Maxg is right about the concentration thing. The dopamine released during smoking does heighten concentration, reaction times, and memory.
