    madanthony,

As far as animals are concerned then we are evil since we eat them or use their bodies for clothing, medicine, etc.... even eating vegetables is killing something.

Does that make us all evil?

'Good' and 'evil' are extremes on a spectrum of behaviour. Also subjective. One's person's good may be another's evil.

Kill one man in history. Quite enough of that going in without adding to it. Perhaps it would be the first human ancestor then humans would be 'history' and neanderthals would rule. Oh they already do.....

    Moral relativism.

What if we worked less, ate only vegetables, didn't use any kind of machinery, stopped all industry and pollution, abolished money.

    Would we become better people?

I would kill Sayyid Qutb (1906-1966) without hesitation if I had the chance. He was the founder of modern day Islamic terrorism and preacher of a perverted version of the Quran in his writings which influenced Bin Laden and others. He was such a fanatic that he even stopped praying on Fridays (Muslim holy day) "because there was no Caliph reigning over Muslim lands." The world would now be a far safer place if he had never existed.

Spidergoat. Columbus sailed to a land that many knew existed and many had been to from half a millennia or more previously. It was only a matter of time before America was opened up to settlers.

lucifer's angel. Because of the strike incident in the 20's? While some claim they could have fought certain battles better than Churchill did (foresight is wonderful), Churchill's biggest contribution to the war effort was in uniting the British people and giving them hope after the rest of Europe was in German (and Italian) hands.

I had said Hassan al-Banna for similiar reasons. Was Sayyid Qutb worse or more influential than al-Banna?

The idea of traveling back in time for this purpose is an interesting one. I'd think you'd want to be careful to kill the person in a way that would be presumed to be "natural causes" to avoid creating a martyr.

It would certainly be a good way of testing the "great man" interpretation of history verses the "inevitable tides of history" theory.

Another issue is the chaotic nature of events. Suppose you decided to kill Hitler. Certainly an evil man responsible for millions of deaths. Without him, the present would probably be unrecognizable. I'd be a little afraid to kill Hitler because it would upset so much established history.

Suppose there'd been no WW2. Instead of a spasm of violence capped by 2 nukes, the US and the Soviets each developed nukes on their own without ever having seen them used in a real war. The taboo that now exists regarding their use might not have developed and the first use of nuclear weapons might have been a massive nuclear war between the Soviets and the US.

But killing some guy responsible for the rise of Islamofascism would change little except very recent history. At least in the West. And the changes would all be for the better, I assume.

Unlikely. Absent World War II, Germany would almost certainly have developed nuclear weapons before either the United States or USSR. And it's unlikely that a Cold War dynamic between the US and Russia would have developed with Germany looming large over the Continent.

what if Hitler killed inside the Burgerbraukeller 1939

what if Hitler killed inside the Burgerbraukeller 1939 at his yearly party meeting, because he did not leave before elsers bomb exploded?
suppose you can go back in time to munich november 8, 1939 and either advance georg elsers clock by 30 minutes, or use a weather manipulating device producing a frightening thunderstorm which makes hitler, himmler and some other nazi criminals stay inside the burgerbraukeller for another hour. what will happen if they are killed?

many people would be alive...than those people will change who is being alive today...making it very probable that you will not be alive today as well...thus this will never happen.

If Hitler had been killed then, and the final solution etc. had never happened, many a western country would not now be filled with hostile foreigners.

My personal choice, for lack of a better one, would be Constantine the Great, because Christianity is such a boring, stifling religion. I would much rather have religious tolerance (well, as much as the Romans had) and orgies and all that crazy shit than huge, intolerant, boring religions wiping out all the fun, small ones....of course then Islam would have probably come along and absorbed every single one of those leaving us all muslims, but, bleh, I can't think of a better choice just now.

cosmictraveller. It is said that Stalin killed 30,000,000 of his own people as well as others. Even his closest friends were not safe from him. Certainly one of the greatest madmen in history.

If Hitler had never existed it would certainly be a different world now but I don't know if it would have been better. There was a lot of anger among the German people who looked on WW1 as inconclusive, that they never really lost because they were "let off". They might still have rose up and maybe with a better leader.

We know that America would not have joined in the war if it had not been for Pearl Harbour and the Japs, but how about Britain. Suppose Poland had never been invaded? Hitler didn't believe the British would attack him, especially since there royal family were of German descent. What if Germany had offered Britain neutrality and meant it?

    Lots of what ifs?

Good point. But my larger point regarding the first use of nuclear weapons stands. If Germany developed nukes during peacetime, they might have amassed quite a stockpile of them before using them in anger.

And I doubt the techniques for building nuclear weapons would remain a secret for long. So when the chance finally came to use them, it might have resulted in an all out nuclear war. Don't forget, the US used its entire arsenal against Japan in WW2.

Just remember that when you take out a world renowned Famous person that has influenced the world as we know it, all manner of changes would be unleashed upon the world you know.

For instance killing Hitler before the war might have averted a war and saved the lives of people that were killed in regards to his scheme of things, however the number of world alliances, The U.N. a number of specific Human Rights Declarations and a number of people that came from the ashes like phoenix's would all be lost. There might never have been a cold war standoff and nuclear conflagration could of ended in a final show down.... The world as we know it could be a radioactive wasteground, all because of the butterfly effect from killing one evil dictator.

I would kill Hitler. He stood for an hateful school of thought that still exists today, and is responsible for millions of deaths.

Besides that, I would kill Pol Pot. Pol Pot was completely mistaken and completely corrupt.

Other communist leaders, notably Mao, Stalin, and Kim made serious mistakes but defended a worthy idea.
