Just caught this thread and it's kind of poignant for me because I basically joined to stretch myself in the intellectual department ( so far, so good, I'm learning plenty). And being new, I haven't had a real chance to work out who the big brains around town are and they probably post in threads I'm not even interested in. Generally ( with a few notable exceptions, who are too dumb to even realise who they are) the intelligence level seems really high. There appear to be some completely manic fruitcakes around too, and some high horse riders but it's an interesting place. what I find interesting is the different manifestations of intelligence, some are so linear in their thinking it's just scary, not to mention tunnel visioned. I'm much more drawn to the likes of Spuriousmonkey and Shichimenshyo whose succinct humour I find irresistable. Really, too many smart cookies to mention. And as for myself, I sure won't be making top I.Q lists but I reckon I'm more balanced than some.
To know why we can't measure intelligence, you must know the absolute definition of intelligence first. Intelligence comes down to your reasoning capabilities, your ability to differentiate, acquire/learn and apply....it has nothing to do with knowledge. None of these categories are displayed on a forum, not even a little bit. Outside a forum, is it measurable? No, and even if it was the result is sure damn relative. Intelligence is only half the story to "higher being".
A long time ago, I was given as the defintion of intelligence that it was the ability to solve problems, and no-one has ever told me a better one. To solve a problem you may: 1. Do something which has succeeded before in encountering that problem 2. Do something which someone else has told you worked 3. Think up a new solution to the problem If you are always doing 3. then in many situations you will be dead, which is not very clever at all.
The usual measurement isn't IQ or any other artefact but whether they agree with the poster. Its infallible. Usually people who agree with me are intelligent and those that disagree are complete dolts. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
