I have a 17" monitor .25 DP A long time ago I actually thought 800x600 was ok, and that 1024x768 shrank things too much (actually when I was on my parents PC before I got my own, they can of mandated 800x600 I think, sooo...)

But I tried it for a little while on suggestion of a friend when I had my own PC. Much better image quality and it gives more room for icons to clutter on my desktop (and bigger windows obviously as well). I got used to the smaller things.

But fooy, high refresh rates look terrible on my monitor

i have a 'Pro-view' 15" flat screen monitor, energy saving with speakers built into the base. 600x800 res. i would recommend flat screen to anybody because they save so much space and are really sharp. the speakers in the stand act in conjunction with my normal sound blaster speakers to provide surround sound. I had a 'Samtron' 17" monitor before (still got it but un-used) and i wouldnt go back to it after using this one.
    flat-screen is the way ahead!

LCD (or, Liquid Crystal Display) true digital flat panel monitors are good for certain things.

To really get the benefit, you need a video card with a DVI (digital video interface) output. Instead of a standard VGA connector to an analog monitor (you can use this, but you won't get the really good image quality).

Also, LCDs are quite limited on their frequency (refresh rate). And they suffer from a couple of probs (don't quite recall off hand).

They are also, of course, VERY expensive compared to CRT monitors (about twice as much at least, though they have taken a fall recently).

The image quality can be quite superior, but they are limited on their resolution as well (I don't think any of them currently will go above 1280x1024)

They would be good for standard apps, video viewing, and heck, basically anything besides gaming. Cuz if you have V-sync on, you are really going to limited your frame rate.

At this point they are starting to get a market for people besides the rich. They are improving as well (a few years ago, they were almost a beta and R&D type technology).

Also, there are flat screen analog monitors, that supposedly look better than the bent ones. They can't compare with LCD, but if you are going to get a CRT, that would be the choice

    My res. wan't listed... 1280 x 854 (widescreen)
BTW I would discourage anybody from getting a flat panel monitor unless you are going to buy a really nice one and then it isn't worth the money any more. You can get a Huge normal monitor for those prices or even a projector. The sweetest screens are those "flat screen" monitors, I can stare at those things forever and not get tired. very relaxing.

WHOLY MOLY! Has the max. Screen resolution gone up to 2048x1536 and beyond all ready? How do you read the screen at that size?

You need at least a 19" monitor to support 2048x1536. The pixel size itself is the same, but it is spanned across the monitor display, so it kind of streches across the screen itself. It would be like looking at 1600x1200 on a 17"

There is more screen area to fill with the pixels

Who knows, you might even need a 21" for 2048....
