Microsoft Virtual PC is an awesome PC simulator to say the least! I use it a lot when creating new images. You can completely test the new system install without the need of a test PC or burning CD/DVDs.

Funnily enough I've been experimenting with this recently but couldn't get it to work properly. I was using it on XP Home, which 'isn't supported' but it seemed to run well enough.

The problem I had was with the virtual hard disks. I created 2 fixed disks of 500MB and 1GB and added them to the setup. However, when I launched it I could only see the floppy disk I used as a boot drive, the CD drive I added plus 1 hard drive [C:]. The problem was with this single hard drive, which was only 2MB in size - not the 1GB I specified. The other 500MB disk that I created and added was nowhere to be seen.

So, tell me - what the hell's all that about?

Why would I need this type of software program if all I do is use my PC at home for various trivial things I use it for? Is there a real need for this program?

Yada yada yada - shut your stupid baboon-like face.

I'd say mid-80s to mid-90s. Early Command & Conquers, The first couple in the Commandos series, Little Big Adventure I & II, Dungeon Keeper I & II - I've got loads of them, only a small percentage of which I've ever played. So now I need a good emulator to run them. Used DosBox in the past, which is pretty good. Virtual PC seems even better - if only I could get it to work.
It's only useful if you have old games or software that you want to use, or for testing a new OS like MickMeister.

There's a company based here in Cambridge that provides a program called Zen. (Might be Xen, it's just been bought up I think my MS)

Basically it allows you to run several instances of windows within windows. This is useful for things like hardcore virus checking. Google ran an experiment using virtual PCs that accessed websites that it had initially screened as potentially 'dodgy'. If the registry or number of processes running on the vPC had changed after visiting a website, then they could assume that the site was dangerous. They found many 100's of thousands of dodgy sites.

I guess a question for those that test the Virtual PC thingy:

If you have a 32-Bit OS installed with Legacy drivers on a x64 architecture, can you run a Virtual version of the 64-Bit OS to test if their are now drivers compatible to run the components of that PC?
