I ask what sci fi group we will resemble in 500 years. I think the UNSC, since most of the tech in it isn't all that far off, though the weapons are infinitely more advanced then ours, despite their appearence. I picked these four since their something of the most prominent of popular culture sci fi groups.

    None.

The development of nano and genetic technologies will have humanity evolving into things that we cannot imagine within a century. The technology is too tempting and we have ceased evolving-- so it's pretty much our only hope.

    Stargate
I seriously doubt we have fasther then light engines in 500 years but we might have wormholes that allow near instant travel to anwhere in a 10 LY range so that gives 7 M dwarfs, 1K, 2 lovely G's counting our own sun) 1 very bright A and 1 white dwarf (12 total)
So astronomy sucks but then again we will have some ultra cool telescope so we can actually see a large part of the universe and if we detected any aliens they don't know it or don't care.
Humanity got somewhat bored and cloned neandertale so where not really alone anymore in our little corner of the galaxy.
Mars got partially terraformed and has a decend (yet toxic) atmospheric pressure, same goes for a couple of other planets in other solar systems.

A manned mission to Mars by the time I'm about 90 or 80 is likely. NASA already has plans for a lunar base to be built by 2020 for manned missions further into the solar system. And the UNSC and Covenant are forces from the game Halo. I put them in as I wanted to present forces from TV and Movies, and forces from Video Games. By the way, the Halo movie is being produced as we speak. The UNSC stands for a United Nations Space Command, a evolution of todays United Nations and NATO groups. They use coilguns, space elevators, have colonised Mars, Zeta Reticuli, Epsiolon Eridani, and several other real-life star systems. They also have fusion generators and Earth has become the richest planet, with Africa finally being a developed continent. Their FTL works by generating a huge amount of energy to create a rip in space-time. I picked them because their technollogy is currently being developed as we speak. In 500 years, we could very well end being nearly identical to them in terms of culture and technollogy.

The Covenant are a group of several species of religeous zealots who are trying to eliminate the "infidels" or mankind. Their FTL works the same as the Humans, but acts more like a scalpel, instead of the club that a Human FTL is. That is, they travel faster then humans. They also are more advanced.

Also, Stargate doesn't count as it is set in the present, not the future.

According to google, United Nations Space Command and Covenant is their enemy, in the Halo video game.

I'm not sure that this poll is fair, having two answers (out of four) that boil down to "like Halo" and skipping many many other sci-fi series.

Personally I've vote for a nice technologically conservative Firefly, off the top of my head.

    Are you kidding?
We have incredibly strong selection for men to be pussies. We're breeding all our aggression away.

Now now Roman, it's not that we are breeding aggression away, it's because of those blasphemous women out there that want us to be more in touch with our "feminine" side

I actually think it has more to do with all that agreesion not really serving us well in the modern world. Aggression leads to social disorder and crimes, so society punishes it. The main countervailing factor, muddying our progress to a less violent world, is that the whole world isn't in the social coccoon of modernity. It still pays to be violent in many parts of the world (even some parts of the western world), and aggression is a cheap and easy counter to the aggression of others.

I think that generally the changeover from a hunter/gatherer lifestyle to the modern social one is likely to provide a great deal of pressure on us to adapt. This society is just a millennia old though, so those changes have not had much time to start emerging. Perhaps the gradual reduction of aggression will be a step on that road, but there's no way to tell.

    None.

The physical properties of the universe will be the same in 500 years as they are today as they were 500 years ago. These shows are all anti-scientific and deal in fantasy....'warp speed' etc. are no different than magic wand waving.

The 'human' world 500 years from now will be unrecognizable. Genetic engineering and it's implications for greater diversity among humans, longevity, artificial intelligence etc. will take split our species along various tangents. 'The human' mind and form will be no less varied than if you asked 100 people today to name the ideal piece of music. humans are going to be 'lots of things' in 500 years and live niche lives in niche environments.

If animals were not meant to be eaten, then why are they made out of meat?
