It should be a blue robot type thing below my name. Do any of YOU see it? I don't. When i log in it shows it above my name and the last time i logged in, but i dont see it when i post!

Yeah, it's part of Porfiry's plan to keep bandwidth down.

It just means you'll have to be extra interesting to make up for signature+av loss

Oh, alright then. I guess all those avatars would tend to take up alot of space huh?

I used to get a kick out of limiting the size of avatar to 50x50, but yet people post a big ass image in their signature. That defeats the purpose of limiting the size of avatar. In all other forums the avatar size is larger. Usually they are at least 60x65.

Mother smack is lowest of common denominators. It is neither insulting nor intelligent. It is rather immature and stupid. When you say that, you deserve to get treated like an 8 years old.

    new cheapjack format sucks

even tho I have criticized avatars & sigs I still feel it should be boycotted voluntarily rather than withdrawn. & the size of the screen is funky to say the least. I like PM & Quote. sometimes I prefer pm to posting (controversial) stuff. well anyway glad to be back among the living. (SONG)
"I jus wanna celebrate anotha day o livin YEAH I jus wanna celebrate anotha day o life...
put my faith in the people but the people let me down. so I turn the other way & I carry on anyhow. thatz why I'm tellin you -- I jus wanna..."

i dont know if i like this format yet, i think its only temporary. there is hardly any personalisation but if that keeps sciforums open for alittle bit longer, its good for me.

alright, this post started as a smart-assed comment directed at people taking things way too seriously, but then I saw Brolly's post, and I just wanna say...you people take things WAAAY too seriously!

Don't you and you're friends ever make some ridiculous derrogatory comment with no intent to injure or inflame? I'm SURE you do. And isn't posting on a message board basically another way of socializing? Sure it is. My original post was "Your mother deserves to be treated like an eight-year-old". But all of you children are so totally bent on getting your feelings hurt that I thought better of it.

Someone said "your mother is at least 65 x 60"...what does that even mean?

Jesus, people. take a joke. Take two, you'll feel better.

Lesson #1 in diplomacy: Whiny, smart-ass, and vaguely insulting comments are a poor way to gain sympathy from the only person who can correct the situation.

    Lesson in Diplomacy #2

Vaguely authoritative remarks are a poor way to attract users, who are the people who really decide whether this site will stay alive or not.

    Lesson # 3 in Diplomacy

The attitude that the universe revolves around you will not endear you to other members.

Porfiry can pull the plug anytime - live with it.

Porfiry has been nice enough to figure a way to keep this site open. That it crimps his pocket book when he is a student trying to make his way through school says a heck of a lot of what he thinks is important. That you are put out with a little by having your avatar removed while he works out ways to allow all of us to come to this site, under those conditions isn't very much to ask.

Of course, you could donate several thousand dollars to ensure your avatar is still visiable for the upcoming school year. Somehow, even though your avatar is important to you, I doubt it is that important.

Porfiry comes up with the money it takes to keep this site on line and has asked us, the users that make it so expensive, to help out.

    Have you?

If not then you have no grounds for complaint.

    Actually,

Wet1 has just expanded on what should be said to people who feel that their presence on this forum is the only thing holding it together. The whole point of this forum is the exchange of ideas and information - not to look at pretty pictures.

Shame on anyone who is making a complaint. I don't know how these things work or how funding is utilised, but I do know that Porfiry is the founder and doesn't have to please anyone but himself.

This place has been home to me for a long time now, and I would be upset if it were to fold. Don't knock someone who has been generous enough to shoulder the burden of the upkeep of this forum. Porfiry doesn't deserve, nor should he receive, any criticism for maintaining Sciforums. If you're not satisfied with this site then leave.

I apologise if I sound over the top with my post, but I can't help giving the thumbs down to people who don't appreciate what Sciforums is all about.

I'm sure I speak for a lot of members with this post, and I could say a lot more, but I'm sure there will be others coming to Dave's defence.

PS: If deleting stored PM's helps, let us know, and if you have other ways of cutting costs then let us know.

    Thanks Dave.

OK sure, the point is not in pretty pics. The point is in the content of the discussions. I am not complaining about the abscence of avatars, I am merely pointing out that vaguely authoritative comments do nothing to improve the situation. Porfiry's last post on lesson in diplomacy serves no purpose.

Yes, you can tell people to leave. But I'll also point out that these boards would lose their purpose without users, and remember that sciforums is not the ONLY science related forum. There are lots of places users can go to, such as Physics Forums which is (if not better than) as good as sciforums.

I hate complaining. When something pisses me off I prefer to leave. I'm not pissed off yet, I still have some hope for this place so I'm staying.

I like having Avatars. It gives you a glimpse of what a user is like.

I would donate but at the moment, I need all the money I can get for college. I need a bus pass, supplies, new ink cartridges, new clothes, etc, etc. My tiny wage doesn't cover all of that so I'm under funded

When my situation does improve, I will donate what little I can.
