All I know is that it's a little too cliche for my tastes. Now if it was actually innovative, I might play.

I've never played it but I want to try.

It's like an improvised quest, right?:bugeye:

I've seen the movie Dungeons and Dragons. Didn't exactly match up to my standards, but it was ok.

About the game, I really really want to play it, because I've seen the books in the store, but it looks too complicated. And I'm not the obsessive type, so if I don't understand it within a week, I give up. Besides, I'd rather play an intense game of cards with my friends.

How exactly do you play it?

It's a role-playing game, as in you sit down with a few of your friends around a table and tell a story, except it's interactive.

Being a long time DRAGONLANCE and fantasy fan, i've always wanted to play, but people around here only skate and smoke pot, nobody's even heard of RPG's.

I just buy/download RPGs for my comp. Much better stories, creativity, and you don't need to get your friends together either.

Try walking outside the part of the universe known to the computer. Have you ever walked into a shop and seen the weapon on the back wall that's not in the inventory from which you can make purchases?

You mean in real life? If so, yes. There is a gun shop in my area that has an assault rifle and a tommy gun in their back room on top of some boxes. you can see them through a rectangular opening in the wall behind the archery section. "We take action against shop lifters"

I was refering to in the games, but I like the sign. The non-computer DND allows much more flexability. Try knocking one of the enemies unconcious and hanging him in a tree in the computer games. Unless that is part of the plot, you can't.

Of course man, there are books for everything!

I saw a whole encyclopedia on D&D, it was amazing how much information there was in it! Character bios + sketchs, realms, everything!

Somehow, RPG's never really got through to me. It seemed kind of odd, making these characters real. I know people who are obsessed with RPGs...they scare me.

Then, they all get together, and say stuff like "Did you see the way I hammered the troll back there?" and "I shot him full of arrows, but his Undead abilities kept bringing him back". Weird.

Some friends and I tried once but we couldn't get past picking characters and assigning the strengths and stuff. But, uh, it seemed cool. We just didn't have enough time. We were way too busy with the X-files at the time.

Some stores that sell that stuff will sponser games. We had a game club in high school. there are at least a score of games like DND.

Ok. I'm confused. It's supposed to be an improvised game, isn't it? So why are there ready characters and realms and stuff?

One more question which has nothing to do with the topic. How the hell do I write that italicized "Originally posted by ____" thingie in the quote? Manually, or is there a button for it?

Coz... I did the above one manually.

Yep, at the bottom of everyone's post, there is a small bar which contains buttons that say pm, search, edit, and quote. Just click on the quote button, and a response post window should automatically appear, with the person's entire post within quotes, within the Reply box.

D&D is a terrible load of fun....but...If you've never played before, you might want to try and sit in on a game, or play with some experienced people. It can be quite expensive to start off with. You have to have a Doungeon Masters guide, Players Handbook, and set of Dice at the VERY least. There are books on character class, Monsters, attributes. You can start out by playing prebuilt "Modules" or predefined adventures, or you can completely build your own. Depends on how involved you want to get. I've been playing for over ten years, and I still love it. You just have to be carefull and not let it take up too much of your time.

Even though the "Game Play" is improvised, there still has to be some prdefined outline to follow....Just like Improv Comedy. You couldn't very well play a game with out a set of rules for characters, or classes or even monsters. Otherwise you'de be making up your own game.
