Seven New Wonders of the World? Should there be a new set of seven wonders of the world? Isn't this just a gimmick?
The Hubble is a good choice. But, isn't it going to burn up in the atmosphere one of these days? Just like the old wonders of the ancient world - it didn't last.
The final tally produced this list of the world's top human-built wonders. To be honest, I thought some of these already were on the previous list. • The Great Wall of China • Petra in Jordan • Brazil's statue of Christ the Redeemer • Peru's Machu Picchu • Mexico's Chichen Itza pyramid • The Colosseum in Rome • India's Taj Mahal http://www.new7wonders.com/index.php?id=633
Interesting. Only five of the world's six civilizations are represented. China, India, Aztec, Inca, and Mesopotamia. (Jordan, Rome and modern Brazil are all outposts of Mesopotamian civilization, the most widespread of the six.) Egypt isn't there. The reason is that the Egyptian government requested that the Great Pyramid at Giza not be included as a candidate. The reasoning was a little murky but apparently the public version is that it was already on the list of Seven Ancient Wonders so it wouldn't be fair to be on the new list too. Egypt of course was the first of the six civilizations to be destroyed. Aztec and Inca followed about 800 years later.
Jordan wasn't an outpost of Mesopotamian civilization, they were Arabs from Arbia. Egyptians sayed that the new seven wonders contest was belittling to their Pyramids, and also they refused to participate because people were required to pay money to ba able to vote.

They are all remarkable of course, but I'm not sure I'd put Christ The Redeemer up there with the others. The Statue Of Liberty is more impressive than CTR (in my humble opinion).
The Taj Mahal and the Colosseum are incredible pieces of architecture, but i i dont feel the Statue of Christ Redeemer is up to the same standards of the other places chosen.
Its kinda retarded the pyramids did not make it. They were in the previous 7. I do not recognize the results.

Do you feel the same way about them when you think of the money that went into the construction ....while millions of citizens were destitute and starving? Baron Max
This isn't the first time somebody has tried to make a list of a "new 7 wonders". The last one that was popular included the space shuttle, if I recall correctly. This list is not likely to be widely accepted.
Civilization spread out from Mesopotamia to all the adjacent peoples. The Phoenicians and Arabs picked it up. They did not invent their civilizations from scratch any more than the Greeks and Hebrews did. Civilization was invented independently in only six places: Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, India, Aztec and Inca. The rest of us are the descendants of conquered or assimilated barbarians.
FraggleRocker: I believe that the Maya predate the Aztec by many centuries. Likewise, the Inca are late arrivals, and had been around only a century or so when conquered by the conquistadors. They had assimilated several other peoples under their leadership, people who were somewhat relieved when the top guy was gone, as I recall. I also believe that there were other civilizations in the Brazilian region, now lost [decimated by disease, I believe]. We'll likely be finding more of their past during this century. Your comments [preferrably in another thread?] would be appreciated.
