I don't give money to charities since I've seen lots of awfully expensive cars on the United Way parking lot. I give money to whomever ask for $, no 70%overhead. If somebody will tell ya that there are no starving people in the USA spit in his lying face

I don't give money to the homeless since I saw one getting drunk on it (sad, but I'd rather they eat), now I give cans of soda, food, clothes.

We used to have this guy come over for a meal once a week, but I haven't seen him in a long time.

And yes corruption is disappointing; I've heard of food drives that sell the food they collect.

Giving money seems impersonal to me.
If I want to help the protection of nature, I go and participate in cleaning up the forests, planting trees, working in a botanical garden, etc. Or I adopt a cat and the like.
It makes me feel that I really have done something, instead of paying may way off it.

Everyone always makes grandiose claims of charitable giving ...no one will admit to not giving to charity when asked ....and yet there are millions of people in dire need.

If those who claim to give money actually did, there'd be no poverty anywhere on the fuckin' planet!!

Its not that people don't give, its that there are too many people who use this as an opportunity to line their own pockets.

If you are hungry or out of gas, you'd prefer something impersonal instead of the personal planting garden or pushing a car for 100 miles.

    you know thats not true..

i dont give to charities because they are run like a business, the people who come up to you on the streets in england hustling for charities are usually getting 7-8 pounds per hour and commission.

when i was living in england if there was a homeless person outside a shop i would always ask if they wanted anything.but the place im living now 90% of the homeless people would be quite offended by that

Since you apparently need it more than they do, it would seem alright

How many people, in your entire life, have admitted to not giving to charity?

And not just you, Ken, but it's almost all people ....everyone claims to give to "good" charities, even if they don't give to charity organizations. But if all of those people did, in fact, give to charities, there'd be lots fewer desitute people in the world.

I give to charity but i dont give money. i have seen street people beg and do drugs with the money. i even had one lady who refused my offering of food and asked for cash instead. :m:

I indeed give to whomever asks, no reasons asked. I give to charities from time to time, just not to give them ever again. This "wildlife protection" charity has sent me maybe 20 something stuffed junk mail envelopes after one time contribution. Wildlife my arse. Yes, sometimes I'm in desperate need of getting $, few times I've asked for "impersonal" cash directly, got $2 total, so you may indeed onto something.

I think the idea is to give charity as a gift rather than as aid.

Our daughter's church gives an ark every year through http://www.heifer.org/. We buy an extra water buffalo and pig. The kids both donate something themselves. Usually rabbits or ducks.
We also give to http://www.prettylakecamp.org/ where my husband went as a child. Our son has gone, and our daughter is on stand by for this year.
I also give to the homeless when I see them. I don't care what they do with the money. Their decision doesn't lessen what I do.
We used to give to United Way til we found out they gave to the Boy Scouts. We don't support bigotry.

Quite plenty. As I understand giving to charity organisations is mostly a US thing / pass time. Over here we do that through our taxes and social security system and let the state take care of the homeless etc.

Drugs are also a need, especially if there is no hope in sight. Drug $ is the least you could do, since, obviously, neither you or me are caring enough to help homeless in a really BIG, personal way, which will make the difference in their lives. Small cash handouts are just shame $ we are soothing our consciousness with.
