I am not a communist, it's just that minds need to be open and many ideas must enter them to form a world worthy of human beings.

We need to be able to look at communism/socialism, see what's good about it and integrate it into a new view.

If we don't, then we might as well submit to the soft despotism of modern democracy.

I think this is the Captain's drive. He does not want to turn us into communists, he wants us to think in all possible directions.

Soft despotism is suffocating the potential of human beings. Such system will collapse, just as the pure communist system did. People stop doing innovating things, evolution comes to a halt.
