The Near Earth Object team have found another possible impactor. This one has the highest risk of any yet found carrying a possibility of hitting us on Feb 1st 2019. Details can be found here..

There is coverage from the BBC but not yet from CNN.

    *Giggles*

We should re-direct it with a solar sail so that it clobbers the mid-east!

Seriously, if it is on a collision course, what are our options for re-directing it? How precisely could a solar sail work?

I don't think a solar sail will help a lot. There is not much force applied when using a light sail unless it has a lot of time to work on the object. I think I remember this thing has an orbit of around 800 and some odd days. That means every year and a half or so we have to renew or in some way change the lightsail for the return trip. It would also have to be used in a tacking manner as to divert the path in my opinion.

I have made several posts on the subject of diverting an asteroid as this has come up several times under the "what if" catagory.

Hopefully this will come to naught when the final figures are in for the orbital path.

The U.S. government has rockets that not even I know about that can blow it up.

Pollux, you need a bunk bed, so you can be comfortable on a bed that's hiding under another bed!

nothing is confirmed. i think it is just a piece of tabloid news. why worry about it anyway. if one does come, and is going to hit the earth. it may do some damage to the area hit and the climate, but we would get over it. if one gets through the human race would still survive anyway, and what is a chance of it hitting the city your in etc....

    um......maybe i don't quite understand...

how can one person surviving save the human race? wouldn't it take a minimum of two people? I have a male and female in mind

    .

What if the last man and last women on earth were gay?

Some guy on the news the other day addressed the helpful suggestions of solar sails, missles, lasers etc. by stating that "we are at least 30 years away from that technology."

I dunno know, I think if it was on direct collision course with earth, the R&D people in that department would suddenly be making a LOT of money and would feel pretty motivated to complete such a weapon before scheduled

One nuke sent up now (or as soon as possible) would be enough to save earth if it is determined that the asteroid will hit us.
All we have to do is change its trajectory a bit.
We dont need to destroy the asteroid.

So explode a nuke just off the surface and that will alter the rocks trajectory.
But we need to do it soon, as the longer we wait the bigger the change required.

And current technology could do it, unless the greenies stop us send a nuke into space.

I don't think the "greenies" have much of a leg to stand on. After all, anything big enough to destroy a continent will affect the entire world. Should that happen they will be more worried about survival than how green the earth is.
