I'm seeking a portable shortwave radio to listen to when I'm at work. I would use earbuds or something and hide it, also if I get fired and go looking for a job it would be a welcome addition. Can you suggest something like 80 bucks that's portable and has great features + reception?
darksidZz - Try Sony ICF-SW7600GR. I've been using the radio for over 3 years. It has got many rave reviews and awards. I highly doubt you can find anything better for that price (around $100-120). The construction is very solid, it's got a full aluminum enclosing and made in Japan (again, I highly doubt you can find made in Japan for that price range). I have also tried several grundigs but no comparison, SW7600GR outperforms them all (I believe Grundig is(was) a German company but their products are made in far east and very plasticky). My 2 cents. Best,
I have the same model and it's excellent. I use it all the time when camping out in really remote wilderness areas and can pick up stations from all over the world. It's the best! Aside from it's three foot telescoping antenna, it comes with an "antenna module" booster pack and a large three-foot diameter fold out ring-loop antenna. Go for it!
all over the world? I didn't think stations did much shortwave broadcasting, but then again I've never looked into it too deeply. How popular is short wave? If i got one, what kind of stations would I get?
Yeah, I can easily pick up the BBC, Voice of America, a lot of Spanish-speaking and Chinese stations, and other languages that I'm not quite sure where they're coming from. It's all bounced off satellites. I'm assuming the BBC is picked up from Britain, but it all depends on the satellite's location and reception. I did the samething when I was in China. Their t.v. channels really suck - just a bunch of propaganda and Chinese-style soap operas, except in Hong kong. Hong Kong's cool. In Mainland China I just buy a cheap Am/FM/Shortwave/Cassette. Everybody else buys them too so they're available to buy anywhere. I listened to the BBC every morning to keep up on the daily world news, the FM for some nice tunes, and the cassette to use for language-study tapes or boot-leg music that you could buy for a penny on the dollar. But that Sony unit is definitely the best! No doubt about. I'd hang that loop antenna up on a tree five-hundred miles away from any broadcast station up in the Yukon and Alaskan and could pick up scores of stations from all over the world. Maybe the great reception up there has something to do with tapping into the wavelength frequencies of the Aurora Borealis. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
I just bought this http://www.kaitousa.com/KA11.htm can you please tell me your opinions of it, I should've consulted you all before purchasing, now I'm wondering it it was a rip-off or will be a good fun investment.
This unit is slightly smaller. The Sony unit is about twice the width but a little thinner. It also doesn't come with a thermometer. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
