Some Australian researchers managed, so they say, to teleport a beam of light. Check it out. The Minister of Science is supposed to be saying something about it later today.

    Two birds with one stone?

    Teleportation
    Quantum Computer

And in sciforum we still think things are impossible....same on us!

Now all it is missing is the food replicator....

BTW: I have always wondered why no Startrek had a quantum computer....

Well, that is just great. How long do you think it will take before they can transport humans?

    Fascinating huh.
Now, if they could refine that, and then perhaps come up with something like the replicator from Star Trek (well, it seems to me all they'd have to do would be instead of reassembling the molecules as they were, but as something different, they'd have a replicator - you know, like take a passing asteroid, teleport the molecules, and then reassemble it as a well-cooked steak) then we could have a serious go at changing how the entire world works.

    Imagine the possibilities.

    Quote from article:

In an experiment last month, they teleported a laser beam of light -- moving it instantaneously from one part of the lab to another.

Another FTL misrepresentation. Obviously the writer of this article is only interested in headlines. Sensationalism strikes again.

Probably, Q, but you have to admit... this could get exciting in a few more years if they keep at it.

    Squid ...

Just as exciting as were 'The Savior' to return to earth ...

And how many times has that been 'predicted'?

    Take care

    Thoughts on teleportation...

Doesn't teleportaion happen in the quantum world all the time?

    IBM Labs

It's that subtle information we are looking for.
    (EPR) correlations coming up.

    A fun talk on teleportation

Hmm, your link seems to be down but if this is the same teleportation experiment i heard about then they didn't actually teleport the photon. The guy said they transported the properties of the 1st photon to another one. Unless this is a different experiment.

    Awesome!

    Teleportation! Cool!

Now we can all say (without feeling corny) "Beam me down, Scotty!" Or Joe, or Bob!

Possibilities are endless! Imagine: travelling without lifting a finger, being able to go home for forgotten lunches, never being late for school/work/church/secret organization meeting again, no more fuel-guzzling environmentally damaging vehicles, ordering food right before your eyes, the instantaneous-neous of it all....the possibilities....*Homer Simpson drool*...woops! Excuse me.

lol! But maybe showing up half dressed will become fashionable the day we have teleportation, eh?

So they spent a lot of time and money in order to move light particles across a room. Something which the light particles could do on their own, faster, without all the equipment.

How is this a step towards teleportation?

That was what I was thinking, Northwind. Light is a lot faster than teleportation. All they did was slow it down.

Like all experimentation, its a first step.

the difference between transporting a beam of light and a human is billions of atoms.
    Start small.

And yes, it would have been quicker to shine the light across the room, but that wqasnt the point was it. The point was to show that they could transport it across the room.
Now expand the range and we have a useful technology to develop.

Yep, next thing you know, they'd probably be teleporting rats and then chimps! Of course, it'd be faster just picking up the rat and hurling it across the room, but then, can you chuck a rat across the Atlantic? You could, but it'd require some sort of cannon, and if you want the rat to arrive dead and mashed up, hahaha!

Thank you for your greeting. You have a very valid point about the overall distance it must travel. Unlike time travel, this has more benefits than downfalls. If this becomes a reality, people will get killed in transporter accidents, you would get a police officer knocking at your door (after just teleporting there) saying 'Your husband/wife/child/cat has just been involved in a teleporter accident, we are very, very sorry'. But the main risk is security. Whats to stop you teleporting into a bank vault or into someones house. You'd need certain security precautions.

    Thor,

Here is another that I don't think anyone has thought of.
Let's say a teleportation device happens to have a small time dialation, this means you don't just teleport from place to place but you can teleport from parallel to parallel.

This gave me the thought that at the instance of teleportation you might get stuck in a cycle (from the Cyclic universe theory), this cycle can be infinite although it only lasts an instance. It's infinity is "Parallels".

I've discussed more recently alot about multiworlds and parallels in other posts, but I know that a parallel could cause changes, and with an infinite number of parallels your teleportion for that instance would become more and more like a chaotic fractal pattern.

What does this mean? It means in the instance you step out of the teleporter, your physical being has "evolved" to it's highest evolutionary state. Imagine 1 Million years of evolution passing in the instance of teleportation travel.

Admittedly the evolution I mention isn't becaues of Genus and the gene pool, ut more of chaos and how your molecules are assembled.
