why do guys like porn? why do people like air! oh and yes, we're very charming... Actually, porn for the most part is kinda ridiculous really. I mean, i'm not the kind that needs to keep my sex drive reved up in full gear all the time, so honestly, appreciating the real thing only every once in a while is way, way better, more sane, more tasteful, you know.... real. Plus, if you limit yourself, when you endulge, it's more fun.
I will pass on your constructive criticism to the authors when I remember where I read it. The point is that the female mates with the best male first, and then the second best, etc. I think there is evidence of this behavior in some of our closer relatives, i.e. chimps. There is an argument about average testicle size to body mass, and we're closer to chimps in that area. This means that males with bigger balls distribute more seed to each female they mate with. They need bigger balls because the female may mate with more than one male during one fertile period---males with more seed are more likely to have a successful mating. Because we have relatively large testicle to body mass ratio, this suggests that our behavior is more similar to chimps than to, say gorillas. Gorilla males fight for control over a small group of females---that is, the competition is over by the time they mate. They have relatively small testes. (I never thought that I knew so much about ape nuts.)
There was an interesting story about some Soviet block country right after the fall of the Berlin Wall. After years of Soviet oppresion, some entrepenior was getting rich by selling a porno mag called Sexy Girl. He decided to expand, and came out with a new magazine called, Sexy Man. It was a flop.
Maybe the reason men like porn goes back to when we were cavemen. When a man saw another man having sex with a woman, it fired a shot of sexual competition in him. After all, if he just lay there idle, while another man is procreating his heart out, what good is he? Maybe this instinct was formed by bouts of massive human orgies. When a man saw lots of people having sex, becoming sexually aroused by this might be seen as an advantage, because then he's going to be more likely to join in the action and perhaps contribute a sperm or two into the vast pools of semen at the tops of the females' vaginas. Chimps have orgies and I'm pretty sure humans do as well. We're not so different. So I can definitely see how it would be advantageous to be aroused by the sight of sex in the act. Where there is sex, there is often the opportunity for sex just around the corner. Our fascination for porn could be justified in such a way. Or else, it could just be a natural side-effect of us males being very visually aroused animals.
Something tells me that cavemen who were by all pretty hungry and bored had their own system for not annoying each other to much during sex (with al the weapons around and stuff). Altough if your looking at the cavemen "?porn?" if that's the word their was certain respect for the body perhaps even more then today.
I'm not saying that the instinct that causes men to like porn will necessarily cause men to not respect each other's space when having sex, by say, simply removing a copulating man from a woman and then proceeding to copulate with that woman, although that's entirely possible. I'm saying that where there is sex, there is the opportunity for sex nearby. Thus it is advantageous for a man to be charged and aroused by the sight of sex, because it gets him ready and bold when the probability of a sexual encounter is at its peak. Women are not as sexual of animals as men for the most part. Men are horny pretty much, well, I wouldn't say all of the time, but certainly they're not ones to pass up on sex. Unlike women. But when women are horny, they want dick and they want a lot of it. There is a good biological reason, for this too. It is a strong biological imperative for a woman to want to have sex with another man after she already had sex. This is to promote sperm warfare. It is in the woman's best interest to promote sperm warfare and to have as much different sperm in her as possible. This is because the sperm which wins out has the strongest, most potent army. Thus, the child will possess the genes for the superior sperm war competence. This is, needless to say, extremely important and it's not hard to understand why animals would go through great pains and adaptations in order to increase sexual competency/sperm war competency. Women encourage it, because it's in their best interest. Thus, it's not unlikely that a woman will have sex with a spectator after she had already had sex. And that spectator who is horny and brazen will be more likely to copulate than one who is flaccid and disinterested. Hence, it's understandable how sex can be a spectator sport.
Well, what would happen to feminine power if they could not lead men around by their nads? That's what I think they are really afraid of when they beat up on porn.
In the modern age, men pursue porn for the same reason as they play video games to perform amazing virtual feats of manhood. They fail in reality, but video games give the ego rush of having power and skills, while porn allows them to imagine that beautiful woman would make themselves available to such losers. Escapism is a massive industry over the last 50 years. It coincidently appeared as Western men became effiminate and no longer able to act like real men. It's probably best to do a reality check and stop escaping into virtuality where all efforts are impotent and have no actual effect on your life other than wasting time that could be better spent on real feats.

In general women are sexually aroused by porn. But they do not seek it as diligently. They seek chocolate and romance novels/soap operas instead. Right next to the Hustler's racks are the racks of Harlequins - and the internet hasn't killed them off. The most thorough study I recall (and I have no interest in the 2 million worthless hits a Google search on this topic would dump on me) was interesting in that it showed an inverse correlation between a woman's admission of arousal and her degree of physiological response to pornographic images. As far as evolutionary factors: On the large investment per child / importance of variety in mating assumptions human females might do best reproductively, in theory, if they had at least one good provider mate and occasional - infrequent - quick flings or even gang bangs under circumstances chosen by them. human males would then do best if they were good provider mates, and capable of responding to the offer of a fling or taking advantage of orgy opportunity on quick notice. and most human cultures provide that setup, although since agriculture the males have had more control over the "circumstances chosen by them" aspect.
