Sam, don't forget that, even with all of the technology in the world, there are still humans involved. With humans involved, one man, say thinking about his girlfriend instead of his job, could do a lot of damage. Having experience in such matters, it doesn't surprise me at all.

As Baron Max has pointed out, they were extremely far away and were being fed false information. In war, this often happens. Sadly, a British comrade was killed due to this tragic mistake. However, that is the way of battle - confusion and imprecision. The best we can hope for is a minimalization, not an ellimination, of this.

Hmm I think most soldiers are pawns in war games. I doubt as much attention/investment is attached to protection of soldiers as is wasted elsewhere in the military.

 

Kunax, your the one talking out your ass, I flew Helicopters in Vietnam and can tell you that even from a slow mover like a chopper it is difficult to identify a object from 2.5 miles, 500 Ft. AGL, and our top air speed was 120 knots, a A-10 moves along between 180 Kts. to 380 Kts. on a mission, and this incident took place during Iraqi Freedom, and Saddam's Military was equipped with armor vehicles, so it is very possible to miss identify a armored vehicle, as the Baron said shit happens, you just hope to keep it to a minimum.

 

having been in combat, you can also stand behind the fact that you dont shoot if you dont know who or what you are shooting at, isnt that right, buffalo?

derrr.....a sunny day with no fighting going on does not qualify as "fog of war". especially when you are piloting a million dollar killing machine.

Its kind of strange how they can not identify british armour but the israeli air force can identify from at least 2.5miles up whether a hizbollah ressistance fighter is in civilian clothing or not!!

or then the people on the ground fucked it up, what ever. this episode was not just one error but an entire list of fuck ups.

What do children and civilians look like at that altitude, Baron?

 

They, like the US, have ground controllers, Zak. That's people on the ground, close to the situation, radioing specific info to the pilots. They also have laser-guided controls as well as GPS-guided controls.

Don't make this another one of your bullshit issues of turning it all against Israel!!

If they can barely see a big vehicle, can barely tell what it is, you somehow can't figure out what humans would look like from the same distance?????? Scientist, huh?? Yeah, right!

So, tell me, what would you do; You and your squad start taking enemy fire from the trees and bushes, or from some buildings. The enemy is hidden, you can't see them, can't know that maybe there are some civilians in the buildings.

Would you allow the enemy to keep firing at your squad without returning fire ...just to keep them from shooting at you? You'd wait until you actually saw and identified the shooters? And you wouldn't fire if you thought that maybe, just maybe, there were civilians in the buildings?
