http://articles.news.aol.com/news/_...k/20070112151409990006?ncid=NWS00010000000001 In an unscientific poll, 60 percent of responders thought humanity would die off within 1,000 years.
Something common to the human species throughout its history. Doom is always upon us. I suspect that most of the people answering the poll, if questioned further, would have guessed that the end would come considerably sooner than later. Doomsday cults have never gone out of style. Even after their doomsdays fail to arrive. Look at Christianity, it flourishes and its doomsday is 2000 years overdue.
I would say the human race will go extinct in the next thousand or so years (probably sooner with the advent of nuclear technology) -- however, not for any religious purpose.
I didn't mean to imply that the feeling of impending doom is a consequence of religion, I merely used the most commonly known and most extreme examples of such a mentality which just so happen to be Christianity. The feeling of impending doom is not religious. Religion enters the picture when one seeks to escape the consequences of the inevitable calamity. But, tellingly, religion seeks not to save the earth from destruction, but rather plays its games on a 'higher' plane of existence. It saves your soul rather than your ass.
I've always likened it to an unaging child with increasingly dangerous toys: sooner or later, that fucker's getting seriously hurt or dying. Our technology is increasing, but our wisdom and nature are staying put. It's just a matter of time before we eliminate ourselves...
I have to agree with them and it is probably way less than 1000 years. It has nothing to do with doomsday, rather with reality. 2 things to be mentioned that weren't there in the last few hundred years: 1. Spreading of nukes. 2. End of the oilage. This is a killer combo and they present themselves at the same time.....
Combine my post with Syzygys and you have a pretty convincing reason to stop dreaming of a utopian tomorrow. All it takes is one stupid politician or someone in a position of power to start the chain reaction... It might not happen in our lifetime, but it's coming.
