I think, it's a question for all. What will you all do, when Bill Gates, or just a bunch of individuals, patent the earth, including the human genome itself, and then charge you to give birth, and charge you to breath air, and drink water, etc? Imagine the future, where you need a license to breath air because clean air costs. Imagine the future where all the water on earth is patented and sold as bottled water. Imagine the future where, life itself is patented, where somenoe like Bill Gates owns the human species itself by owning the genome. Are you all prepared for this future? And in specific I ask this question to people who like to argue topics of race, or things of this sort. In the end when the earth itself is patented and owned, and you are owned, and your genes are owned, and basically everything is owned by just a few hundred individuals, what then?
it wouldnt work. you cant patent something that is in common useage prior to the application of such a patent.

I was following you fine until the bit about the toga... Breathing and drinking have prior art going back a few billion years, so you can't patent them.
You can patent anything the patent office lets you patent, and for a big enough bribe, or with enough social engineering, the patent office will let you patent life itself.
It's true that some stupid patents have got through due to negligence or bribes, but if there's prior art they don't stand up in court.
You can't patent things that are already in common use, unless you modify them in some fundamental way. However, I think your question is valid though you have painted a picture with too wide a brush. I can certainly imagine living environments such as condo's or houses where the water and air is purified and of course you'd have to pay for those services. I can even imagine climatically controlled villages where again the air and water is purified. Gene therapies, spare human parts, prolonged lifespan, organic food, clean air and pure water; they are all viable future commodities and whoever could afford them will have to pay for them, but so what? Quality of life and good health always costs money.
I don't think that is a problem. Mircosoft is just out to make big money at the moment. On the other hand ppl like Hitler are out to kill alot of us off. Read "David Rockafeller Memoirs 2005" and you will get an idea of what a Hitler like world would be like. If Microsoft can beatout that nut and anyone helping him then paying a tax for water, air and god knows what elss is okay by me.
