Wouldn't it be great if the 'Spirit' rover kicked up an ancient martian beer can on it's journey over the surface of Mars.

this thread has so little replies because everywun thought this was some paranormal stuff about pics of spirit ghosts.

i like being nowhere all the time. mars is just a desert so i like it because the prophets in the bible always were in the desert.

you don't know it but there was once a great ocean on sahara, and that's where the dumb flood came from the bible 5000 years ago.

Not true. Many years ago, the Sahara was a forest and probably the introduction of the goat converted it. Reason you idea is obviously false, is that areas as large as France are below sea level. If they were once filled with sea water there would be great salt flats, not sand there.

The more likely origin of the "great flood" and possibly the "Lost Atlantis" story is that during the ice age, the sea level is reduced (to edge of the continental shelf) and rain fall is much less (less ocean surface for evaporation and less solar heating of what remains as the ice cover has increased the reflection of sunlight, but sunlight falling on the ice-free Mediterranean sea is not significantly reduced, so it evaporates. (Large salt deposit have been found buried under mud on the bottom in some spots of it.- so this is consistent with salt water evaporating where as your Sahara story is nonsense, contradicted by physical facts.)

When the Ice age was ending, the rising sea level eventually obtained the altitude of the bottom of the strait of Gibraltar (which was a dry valley then). Once some Atlantic ocean water started to flow thru that dry Gibraltar valley, erosion rapidly increased the flow rate. BTW, the erosion channel is still seen in the bottom profile. - Submarines still use it (and the "salt fingers" of the Taylor instability - which I have describe elsewhere) to slip in and out of the Med without detection.

The Med basin filled to Atlantic Ocean level in about a year - drowning many who had lived in Med-floor villages. At least a dozen small cites/villages many meters below the current level of the Mediterranean sea are known. - This is the “Atlantis story” origin. Even the name "Atlantis" supports this very plausible history, which unlike your “Sahara Ocean” fiction is built on many (about 12) supporting physical facts.

I have noticed that many of your posts are pure nonsense - are you trolling or just ignorant?

    sahara submerged.
    ice age didn't exist.

Thanks for answering my final question (in last post). - I now know you are not trolling, and that the other alternative applies.

    Billy,

I've read fictional treatments of the Mediterranean basin having dried up and refilled at some point. I even started a thread once about The Falls of Gibraltar. (And, I see now that a late post was tacked on to the end with another reference to this theory.)
However, I've yet to see any geological evidence which confirms that any such event took place.
It is a fact that the Black Sea experienced such an event. This is the commonly held origin of the flood myth.

As to the Sahara. It's interesting to think how it acted as a pump pushing the early hunter-gatherer tribes out of Africa.
During the ice ages, the Sahara would periodically green up and then go dry again. During the green periods, hunter gatherer tribes would slowly work their way in, and then when it dried up, they were squeezed out and cut off from their origins. Leaving them only one way to go. Forward. (Of course, only a portion of those affected were pushed out of Africa. Some were pushed back in.)

Well, during the Certaceous period, about 130 million to 65 million years ago, much of the Sahara was submerged under seawater due to Global warming during that period. Sealevels rose and submerged Africa's costal regions and much of the Sahara, as evidenced by the marine fossils found in the Sahara today. When the period of Global warming ended, the seas receeded as ice was formed at the poles again. Since the sea receeded as opposed to 'drying up', no salt beds were left. All this was, of course, before homo sapiens lived and had nothing to do with a supposed 'Great Flood'.

Replace the bold "This is" with "These are" and I completely agree (see more below).

    Thanks invert_nexus
You have looked into the re-flooding of the Med Sea (and the Black Sea) more than me. (I never did, but do recall parts of a few articles I accidentally stumbled upon.) For benefit of others, I quote below a few parts of your post 13 from thread: The Falls of Gibraltar

First I want to note that the sudden, erosion accelerating filling of a lower basin* is quite well establish and not rare (including the only “probable, but not confirmed” events perhaps 50 times are known - One in some part of the US west is well established, but I am not much into geology and have forgotten details as to where.) Thus I strongly suspect that in the collective and confused memory of preliterate man several of these events have merged into the “Great Flood” story, which is common to most cultures. Specifically the Noah version is probably based on both the Med & Black sea events.

    From invert_nexus's old post 13:

“…acoustic waves into the seafloor, and received the echo from whatever hard surface might be under it. They found a reflective layer 100 to 200 meters below the surface, they called it the M-layer, and were at loss to explain how or why it was there. It seemed to mirror the topology of the Mediterranean sea-floor, so it was laid down after the Mediterranean was already formed and at roughly the same proportions of the present-day…”

“…Challenger was drilling south of the Balearic Islands in almost 3,000 meters of water." They pulled up a sample they called a "pillar of atlantis", it was composed of anhydrite and stromatolite. …. then more ooze, etc. suggested multiple dry periods. It mentions "brought up drill cores containing gypsum, rock salt, and various other minerals that could only have been formed by drying up of seawater. …”

“…The topologies of these canyons seem to indicate that they emptied out into a sea that was from 1000 to 1500 meters below present day. …A narrow canyon was found some 290 meters deep. … So this seems to suggest that the refilling of the Mediterranean was not a slow, gradual process with the Mediterranean rising to meet the rising Atlantic, but more of a catastrophic inflowing of water.

    Etc.

I suggest interested readers go to you old thread, perhaps resurrecting it with some comments.
    --------------------------------------------------

*Andre has what seems to me a better explaination of why fossils of tropical plants and animals are found in the Artic Ocean - It was much below Atlantic Ocean level and filled when the Atlantic breached the then existent land bridge between what is now Canada and Greenland. See:

    http://www.sciforums.com/showpost.php?p=1068328&postcount=34

Especially his points 5 thru 8 which are:

    5. Breaching of one of the water channels reconnecting the global ocean to the Arctic at the onset of the PETM event, triggering the chain of events

    6. Refilling of the Arctic basin with warm ocean water along with alien biota (Apectodinium) however at this point the Lomonosov ridge remains above sea level.

    7. The transport of water to the Arctic causes sea level lowering, triggering global-scale clathrate destabilization. But perhaps not Eustatic (world wide) perhaps only the Tethys sea initially (was it isolated?)

    8. Strongly enhanced ocean currents, propelled by the methane gas bubble streams, changed climate, transporting equatorial warmth to colder latitudes causing a moist warm climate.

Do they have any close ups of the water they found?
Was it indeed flowing water or stationary?
