    Hey all

Anybody here use Nootropics? Such as Piracetam, Hydergine, Vasopressin, Lucidril, etc. Do they work well? If they do, why arent they FDA approved yet?

Thanks for any and all thoughts on the matter..

They are life style enhancing drugs same as Ginko or vinpocetin or gotu kola or Huperzine...

Jury is still out if they work on Alzheimers. For a healthy body in low 50s, I found nootropics have the same effect as Choline, Vinpo or Gotu Kola....out of which Choline is the cheapest.

I have been searching for the drug (legal or illegal) to double my IQ but have not found any.....

I heard that the Army was working on a drug that could keep a person awake and alert for extended amounts of time without harm to the persons well being. It would be very nice if I could stay awake for more than 72 hours without side effects. Talk about having more time on your hands!

I've been using piracetam for a while. At the end of this box I'm on, which should be in a month or so, I will not reorder for some time. I'll be able to make some kind of determination then whether or not it sustains cognitive ability. Piracetam is non-toxic, and I've had no problems with it. I would say it's helped me out some, but I haven't really controlled for other factors, such as less rec drug use, exercise, and heathier diet. The best thing you can do is to start with a good diet high in the right EFAs, such as fish, and get exercise. All the drugs in the world can't undo the effects of bad diet, sedentary lifestyle, and too many rec drugs within a time period that you're wanting results for... it takes time, exercise, and diet to undo those things. Your brain is part of your body and your mind is your body. Make the whole thing work well and often. Nootropics should be looked as sort of a performance tweaker (for the healthy; for alzheimer's and the like it can be seen as a possible curative), sort of like a nitrous tank for a hot rod: if you're driving a Datsun 210 you don't really need nitrous, you need a new car first. Nootropics shouldn't be viewed as something we need to increase IQ per se, but to optimize our ability to use it. It's an inevitable fact that as we grow older our brain loses its ability to think as fast or as clearly. Nootropics, if they work, should stem this effect. It is not necessarily all about life extension, but ability extension.
Check out the usenet newsgroup rec.drugs.smart; that's where all the old schoolers hang out.

I've been reading some reports on an extract of the herb Cat's Claw that some company has patented; it has synergistic effects with ginkgo on repairing and reversing the damage caused by alzheimer's. The nootropic effect for healthy individuals of this extract has yet to be clinically studied or verified, though some herbal supplement companies are already including it in some brain formulas. Beware of some of these formulas; though they may help, they may not necessarily be the wonder drug you're looking for.

I took Piracetam for 2 months regularly. Did NOT notice any noticeable improvement. At least no more than taking just plain Choline. So, may be these drugs do not do much for healthy people. I hope to take it when I am 90 years old. Then, I might see some differences.

There may be another reason why I did not see any major improvement. My theory is that, even in work environment I coast, it is like having a 500HP engine in a street car but everybody drives only at 70 mph. So Piracetam may give me another 100 HP - but I will never know, because I dont have a place to drive faster....

My theory could be wrong too....
