But when you compare cancer rates of smokers to non-smokers, smokers have much higher rates of cancer. If lung cancer was, say, prevalent in 5% of the population, but the smoking subpopulation had a 10% cancer rate, then smoking effectively doubles the rate of lung cancer. While I'm glad that your granny didn't have any terrible consequences for smoking her whole life, such anecdotal evidence is hardly meaningful, and even misleading, when evaluating the dangers of tobacco. High turnover rate would cause replication errors and cause cancerous cells, yes. Shortening of telomeres would kill the cells, not make them cancerous. Cancer cells are able to reproduce indefinitely because of their high concentrations of telomerase.
I quit smoking in 2000 and I have to say I don't regret it. I find smoking detestible now, It's horrid to smell of smoke when a non-smoker and bad if people decided to smoke in inclosed spaces. During my period of quitting, I had pre-emptively started to smoke a particular brand of Ultra-Low nicotine/tar cigarettes. At first I found myself smoking more than what I had due to the change in nicotine levels. After a few weeks of the lower type, I just outright stopped smoking cigarettes. Due to the levels of nicotine being so low it was pretty easy to give up, however I did find it a pain to deal with the new found anxieties. For instance what to do with your hands during that period of time that you want to do something (which originally would of been smoking) I found my answer was a very cheap method indeed, it just involved getting hold of a Milkshake straw that you'll find at most fastfood outlets. I chopped it in half to about a cigarettes length and everytime I wanted to smoke a cigarette I would just breath air through the straw. It was far cheaper doing the above than finding nicotine patches and nicotine inhailers, I eventually weened myself off the straw from realising that it wasn't actually doing anything for me sucking air through it. Good luck on quiting and just remember if you find a packet of cigarettes lying around, Destroy them before they destroy you.

Keep up the good work, buddy. Don't want your lungs looking like this: Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
if you quit when youre relatively young your lungs will repair themselves.. i think before 30 is the key
So lit one up! What the hell, you might be crossing the street tomorrow and get hit by a garbage truck! Non-smokers can die knowing that they're lungs are pink and healthy, you can die knowing that you had that last cigarette. What's the difference? Baron Max
That's right, having your lungs removed from your chest and sliced in half is very bad for your health. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
Keep it up Zak!!! Bruv, print these pics out and put them in your bedroom, put them on your phone, on your comp desktop etc. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! You could try reading anti-tobacco material, build up some rage and that, read up on how those cigarette scientists tested ciggies on poor innocent monkeys, read about how it has effed up so many lives etc. That should help.
