I quite enjoyed Unbreakable, but Signs was a gross disppointment. Haven't seen anything else of his, though.

First of all its M. Night Shyamalam!

He's got sucked into the Hollywood machinery; he should take time out to think about his stories.

    I really enjoyed Unbreakable!

Umm... I'm on kind of a middle ground. I think his movies were good, so not a one hitter, but I wouldn't say he's a genius either.

I really liked Unbreakable, and Signs, the others I couldve done without...excepting Lady in the Water. I gotta tell you, I think that it is his best movie yet. Really good and original plot line and great cinematography. I think, if you didnt like M. Night then, you will have a change of heart when you see this movie. But, I have to say, the Village was a crap sandwich.

Sorry to say but M. Knight is a has been. He blew his load with The 6th Sense, and the remarkable Unbreakable. Signs, was an abomination. How can an Alien species, that has figured out the secrets of inter-stellar space travel, come to earth, and walk down the streets of a third world country howling like the boggie man, or something out of a B-movie horror flick. And the Village was a snore fest. And Lady in the Water, you've got to be fucking kidding me. Once he releases Unbreakable 2 I'll jump back on the Bandwagon. Until then Syanora!

Yeah, Signs was ridiculous. Why would ingenius aliens come to a planet that is 75% water - a substance they're allergic to? Rah.

I also loved Unbreakable and the 6th Sense. He needs to come up with with some original themes, though...ever notice how the main character is some angsty guy who feels in some way lost or depressed, and then finds something that fills him with purpose? It's dejavu everytime I see a Shayamalan film.

He had one idea. It was a little cool. Now he's done.
    No more, please.

I liked Sixth Sense and Unbreakable. The Village was alright. I hated Signs as it bored me to death. And I have absolutely no idea what Lady in the Water is about even after watching the trailer a few times. Looks like some documentary of some guy's boring life and then bam, all of a sudden he finds I guess a lady in the water? Anyone wanna shed some light? Heh.

Well, Lady in the Water (without spoiling it) is about this guy (yes, he is the arcitypal [spelling?] Shayamalan character) Cleveland, who works as a apartment something (he fixes problems for the tenents as his job and lives in a house on the grounds) and recently he has been hearing strange noises in the pool. The sounds are of this...sea nymph type character who is on earth trying to tell a prohpecy type thing (trying not to give away important plot details). And she needs to find one person, and look at him to unlock something in him that will save humanity... know sounds like a fairly boring plot. But, I think that this was one of his best because its not so much focused on all of the suspense and horror as much as the art of suspense itself. In this one, it is more of a mystery type thing. And it has MUCH more humor in it than any of his other movies. To me, it is a near perfect balance of great cinematography, good suspense (but not forced suspense), humor (lightens the mood so its not so serious), and really good acting. I really liked it, personally, and it is explained a little better (and this might answer some of your questions) here (just watch the 11 minute one).

He's a hack. His material's for the masses that like to pretend that they're not part of the masses.

Yes he makes movies with big stars and budgets that are a little different. There is nothing wrong with that.

I actually liked Signs though few seem to agree with me. The Village was good, Unbreakable was a bit dissapointing but ok and obviously the Sixth Sense his best.

here are two film critics and a fan going at it.

it is a little biased, but i randomly came across this clip while looking for scenes from nightmare on elm street movies....thought of this thread.

He's one of my favorites. I didn't understand anything much in Signs and didn't enjoy it. But I loved the others. Especially Sixth Sense and The Village. I haven't seen the other one yet.

I've not seen Lady In The Water but for me his movies have got progressively worse. Sixth Sense-very good, Unbreakable-good, Signs-poor, The Village-very poor, Lady In the Water...?
I just don't like the way the story is dragged out over hours and hours to then badly reveal a plot twist, or not even a twist but a daft idea (see Signs). They don't pay off on the investment but M.Night seems to think a few funny camera angles and emotional leads can make up for any failings in the plot and pace. A good cast does not a good film make.
He'd be better of directing adverts.

Lady in the Water is very convoluted and undefined. I'm not sure what it was about but it mixes fantasy with drama with...I'm not sure. M himself plays the role of a prophet. It was visually appealling, had monsters and a creepy mood throughout but it felt glued together and I'm still not sure what it was all about. I like the director. So every one of his films isn't a hit, he still has talent and I bet he'll pop out a blockbuster soon enough.
