How unprofessional. I thought you knew that soldiers do not fight for their personal beliefs in the army of a democratic country. They do whatever the people elect them to do (or their representatives in the government) unless it endangers the constitution or any other binding regulation.

How did you slip by the psychology tests?

    exactly.

And nice to see you are still using the 'ass on the line' argument despite frantically denying it in another thread.

spuriousmonkey: You've got no clue do you? Why do people join the military? Because they want to serve their country. Thats what i did, thats what BR did, thats what many Australians, Americans, Canadians, British, French, Iraqi, Indonesian, New Zealand, Mexican, Argentinians, Germans... ok now i'm just rabbling.
The point is people have a belief, they act on it... in my case, i believe in my country, i acted on it, Billy boy has a belief... well we'll see if he acts on that... Foley has a belief, and just sits on his arse all day posting incredible amounts of dribble, He's done nothing to serve his beliefs except annoy a number of people with his presence here. Can you stop the BR bashing for a while? It gets in the way of a good debate

I've got no problem with anyone's willingness to risk his life for a cause he believes in. My problem is when he has the power to force all of us to risk our lives for a cause he believes in. That is exactly what any American President would be doing in this situation if he were to provide Israel with very much more than moral support and humanitarian aid. It would increase the probability of the war escalating, going nuclear, and dragging the world's larger nuclear powers into the conflict. This really could turn into World War III and sending American troops in would ensure that.

Personally I feel more supportive of Israel today than I did of South Vietnam forty years ago. No wait, that's not right. What I feel is more enmity toward fundamentalist Islamic militants than I ever did toward the communists. Religion always makes me uneasy, but a patriarchal monotheistic religion (the worst kind) on the warpath scares the crap out of me. I guess that means I'm really not all that sympathetic to Israel either, since Zionistic Judaism satisifies the same definition. But I do feel that a world that becomes increasingly dominated by the lunatic fringe of Islam will be a much greater threat to America than the communist movement, which grows more pragmatic every year, could ever have been.

I don't hold Clinton's evasion of the draft against him. JFK and LBJ should have been removed from office for getting us into that unconstitutional war. Clinton was one of us. A draft-dodgin', pot-smokin', free-lovin', rock'n'rollin', forward-thinkin', color-blind, intellectual, hippie wannabee. It seemed like my parents' generation had about five Presidents to represent them and direct the course of the development of the nation. We had exactly one. Bush may be chronologically a member of my g-g-generation, but he is and always was the personification of what we were fighting against.

Clinton might be willing to risk his life to defend Israelis, but not to save the Vietnamese from communism.

Bush's story is the same. But who says communism hasn't benefited Vietnam? And where is it written that the US has the authority to 'save' anyone from anything? We installed rightwing military juntas complete with death squads in Latin America, supported murderous dictators Mobutu, Pinochet, D'Aubisson, Rios-Monnt, Duvalier, Somoza, Marcos, Fujimori, Pastrana and now Uribe, Trujillo, Stroessner, Batista, Suharto and even Pol Pot as he fought the Vietnamese upon US command and it's said the US "saved" people? Preserving democracy!? We arm and fund Israel, the terrorist rogue state with WMD's and have destroyed Iraq. Democracy in Action!

The difference is Bush wants people to think he's good with war, but he doesn't know the first thing about it. Clinton wanted people to think he was good at avoiding war, which he was.

Er... wasn't he studying at Oxford University at the time?

He didn't dodge the draft. He was exempted - just like a lot of other people.

Part of the problem is that when anyone presents any item for debate those that cannot respond intelligently (or with proper English) resort to "did he inhale" as a retort.

What is more important? Debating Clinton's alleged inhaling of pot or what the hell is going on on the globe? Can you tell me that all of the other leaders-of-nations (past or present) are innocent of any and all wrong-doings?

    Focus!

I wonder: What has whether he smoked marijuana or not got to do with his ability to lead the nation? I don't see the connection.

Well, actually is you look at it from the viewpoint of reality most people in the US join the Armed forces because there is no other option. To get the educational benefits, money to live, healthcare. All very mundane reasons. And then you have the few psychos like Buffalo. Eager to shoot some 'rag heads' (his words).

This phenomenom was clearly visible in the Dutch army when they switched from military service to professional army.

Since nobody has to join the army in the Netherlands to get education or healthcare or a job the army had to be filled with the 'fanatical' ones or the ones who can not do any better. In order to do that the army had to lower it standards.

The results? Increase in drug related incidences. Decrease of IQ. etc.

In conclusion a democratic orientated army got turned into a ... ? Well, what could be call it? Improvement? Hardly.

I'm sure they are well trained nowadays, but I would prefer a draft army above any professional army anyday.

Unless of course the country is using the army mainly for 'mercenary' purposes. Then you are better off with a professional army.

And look what happened when the Dutch army switched to a professional army. No hesitation was left to send it to places. Afghanistan, Iraq, yugoslavia. You name it. Before that there had to be basically a public debate about every military action.

Let me ask you one thing though:

How many times did Buffalo fight off an invading army that threatened his homecountry.

    Zero.

Exactly. Mercenary army. mercenary attitude. Kill some rag heads.

And don't fucking use the authority argument anymore.
