Have any knowledge you think you can pass to me?

I want to know as much as possible about hooking CPU's up to memory units and periferals.

In other words, how do I build an MCU?

If I had some RAM, an old intel CPU + clock and some I/O periferals could I build my own MCU with no other componets? Or would I need another, smaller embedded MCU to handle loading the first instructions into the CPU.

My level is relative beginner: I understand how periferals cooperate on an address bus and how to make address decoders for something like memory.

Any other relevant knowledge you can 'download' into my brain will be gratefully accepted.

    a couple of things here.
    first, is this a joke?
second, I/O periferals? I/O is a bus structure/method of accessing a 'periferal', 'periferal' is what connects to the computer (keyboard/floppy drive/etc.)

last, about your question. the only thing you will need is a rom with the program you wish to execute. also you need to know what address is loaded into the program counter at startup. the motorola cpu 6809 loaded fffe into the counter at startup. this address must be in rom and must contain the starting address of the program that you wish to run.

so the starting address is specific to the CPU in question?ok.

I/O periferals as in misc. devices on the bus or misc devices on general purpose IO pins.

As for downloading stuff to my brain, obviously I'm talking about text based interface!
