I dumped pictures from the camera's flash memory (internal) to the PC (removing hem from the camera's memory). I accidently over-wrote them with another stupid batch of pictures with the same name.

Is there any way to recover them? Do I need like government capability to get them back?

    http://www.datarescue.com/photorescue/

i recovered 100's of images with photorescue, but not sure if it'll work for you because of the file name being the same...or if that even matters.

if the files were overwritten with files of the same name the originals are, in all probability, lost

frankly i don't see how you could've 'accidently' overwritten the files.
if you try to save a file to a location that has a same named file a warning will pop up that requires you to answer yes before the transfer takes place

I didn't have the external HD on. When I copied them over I - like an ass - didn't read the pop-up that obviously asked if i wanted to overwrite the files already written for the given day with the new files.

I'm particularly interested in recovering them from the camera - but fear that the camera re-formats with each on/off sequence.

    Damn! I'm such an idiot!

Yep, but hopefully you've learned a lesson; that the little message windows are there for a reason.

Having worked in IT support, it's amazing how many people don't read them, and do silly things, so you aren't alone.

Don't think you have any chances of getting them back.

Most cameras have a setting in which pictures name assigning can be reset each time, or to make it continuous. I.e. making it impossible to copy over existing pictures.

once youve removed or deleted files from your cams memory storage its gone.at least that was the word within a month or few ago. you might research, but im pretty sure its hist. You could look in the temp folder in docs and settings /username/localsettings/temp i think. sometimes i end up with weird copy strays in there after i download files off my cam. i dont know why. it seems like sometimes they have the file ext. .tmp too. with unusual first names. you can check them with the context menu if you have pica or something like that. its worth a look. shrugs

Hehe-- this is the lesson learned when I (like an idiot) attempted to convert an NTFS volume back into a FAT32 volume.

There are three kinds of deleted-- there is 'mostly deleted', 'overwritten', and 'blank'.

Mostly deleted- Alot of times, the the computer (or the Windows OS)doesn't 'totally' delete something, and just makes changes to a hard drive table that describes the data and where it's located ......it's still there, it's just that the sign that says "here I am" is gone and eventually overwritten as the hard drive is filled. In this scenario (table changed, but volume unused), the data can theoreticly be recovered.

Overwritten- means that not only has the table describing the data been removed, but it's been replaced with new data. This usually means you're screwed because there is no longer a complete artifact version of the data. You can find the skull and fragments of the ribcage, but no enough to rebuild the whole skeleton .

Blank- means the volume is filled with a bunch of real zeros (means the data is 100% gone).

What about the dna in the skull...can't you make the organism out of that? Just like in the Jurassic park you know...right...

    Yeah...right...

If you only have 80% of the original jpeg, you can use a jpeg of a frog to fill in the missing part.

I wonder how much % is needed to rebuild a human and make him realize that he is alive. How many memories does it take...

It's bad for you because if you make a copy of a file and if you want to paste it in a place where there is another file with the same name. Therefore it should have a message asking you if you really want to delete the previous picture. If you confirm it I don't think any software can resolve your problem I'm sorry.
But you can test the "Easy Recovery" which can restore deleted files but I don't think you will find your pictures.
