Blaine's underwater stunt

Personally I am more inspired/amazed by those Australian miners who were trapped underground for several weeks. They show much more courage and endurance, and they aren't even doing it for money or publicity, or even attention.

I've no problem with David Blaine. He's just trying to break records like everyone else tries to. And if he's in it for money, as opposed to it being a very nice side perk, he has to make his. Don't be upset that he found a better way to do it rather than working at a boring 9-5 office job like most of us peons here.

If you don't care about him, don't watch. All you're doing is giving him more attention. I guess nobody remembers the phrase "There's no such thing as bad publicity.".

At least he didn't lock himself in a glass ball for a week just for money and fame. Talk about a waste of everyone's time.

 

I actually gained more respect for home when he failed. if he had broken the record, I would not have believed that he really did it, after all, the best in the world (who devote their lives to it) have a hard time staying under that long. the fact that he came up 2 minutes short, makes me believe he really held his breath.

I imagine just about anyone could do 6-7min with the training he had.

moreover, I wonder if being in water for a week would help or hurt his ability to hold his breath?

If anybody’s time was wasted it was because they chose to waste it by willingly participating in his public performance. The attention that he generates is how he earns his living.

That may be true if it was a private performance, but it was a public performance, as you so astutely pointed out. This means that the stunt was on display for the general public to see as they passed by on the street, whether they wanted to deal with the consequent traffic jams and news reports or not.

The funny part is that if the performer was not David Blaine but someone not famous, New York City officials would have deemed the stunt a security threat and disallowed it.

Many street performers in Manhattan are stopped by the police nowadays because they are often viewed as a possible ploy to attract victims for a terrorist attack.

 

You're a fucking moron. Did you stop to think that maybe he got approval for the stunt before hand? Or do you think he just wheeled all that equipment out there and jumped right in?

London and New York are completely different situations when it comes to terrorism fears. And in this stunt he is occupying an entire plaza with the sphere and all the medical and life support equipment, in the London stunt he is simply sitting in a suspended box.

No comparison.

 

He did receive attention, though. Plenty of attention. That would make him a success. The only thing he failed was his attempt to break the world record. If he just craved attention, then he succeeded with flags waving.

 

What are you talking about? London and New York are very similar in this respect. Both cities have seen major terrorist attacks in the last five years, and both cities are viewed as major targets for further attacks. The authorities in both cities are comparably paranoid regarding homeland security.

Oh, no. That's not much equipment at all. Certainly nothing that would cause any kind of a disturbance. Or draw a crowd. Large enough for major chaos to be incited if, say, a small explosive was detonated near its center.

It's magic!

 

Or if detonated in a school, a football game, a rally, a shopping center, or any other common place where people congregate.

It's nice to see the terrorists are winning, altering your lives and making everyone scared to be grouped together not wanting to hold any special events.

London and New York both take terrorism very seriously; that's all I'm saying. I agree that it's a shame, a disappointment, and a detriment to the character of our civilization that we live in perpetual fear, but that's a deeper issue than David Blaine being a jackass.
