I'm building at the moment a new computer (I posted a thread on it a while back). I'm using an AMD 64bit X2 processor on an ASUS board. Given the setup, what would the best operating system be?

I use my computer for web surfing, downloading, DVD/Mp3 playback, word processing, graphics editing (CAD) and a healthy amount of gaming but mainly the forementioned things.

There are so many linux distros. that I'm slightly lost. What would the best one be for my needs and how does running a linux system affect software compatibility - cause everything is made for windoze, right? Is linux actually better than windoze for running speed and reliability?

Looking for preferably a free distro.

    Any help, much appreciated. Thanks.

I believe that FreeBSD, Gentoo and Sorcerer all have AMD64 free distros available although maybe there are more that I'm not aware of. I thought Mandrake had one but I cant find it.

Unless you already know linux or is prepared to a steep learning cure learning it i suggest you go with windows.

however the Ubunto distro should be quite good i hear.

I have never used Linux before but would be willing to learn. I've downloaded the Ubunto distro and put it to disc.

Don't go with Windows 64 Bit, it slows your computer down and many popular programs will not work, like Real Player etc. 64Bit Windows offers nothing but problems.

I've heard that yeh. But installing a 32 bit OS is kinda defeating the point of the 64bit CPU.

Thats is exactly what I thought. But when your computer loses 2000 points on the benchmark. The only advantage to having 64 Bit that I have is that FarCry 64 Bit has better Gfx but they were great anyway.

As soon as Vista is released everything will be geared to 64 Bit and if they make games from the ground up 64 Bit we might see some good improvments.

But the biggest benefit of 64 Bit is the amount of RAM you can use. But with 2 GB's RAM being top of the range at the moment it will be a long time before we need the additional RAM that 64 Bit offers.

64 Bit is a great move for the future of computers but for now its a bit of a pain in the ass.

Youve confirmed what I already was thinking. Thanks very much. I think the best course of action for now is just to make do with Windows XP (32)

If I could turn back the clock I would still be on, good old windows XP (32). Vista will soon be here and it looks like it will be worth the upgrade.

I tryed Redhat Shrike and found it to be really annoying. Went with XP Pro and seems to be working alright.
