I think it's social isolation and relying on totally useless shrinks and hordes of counseling services to deal with psychological problems. In other countries, people speak with people (friends, relatives, even strangers) about those things, their advices could be just as useless as those of a shrink, but at least people get an impression that somebody cares (as unfounded that impression is), besides guys who make living on the professional "caring". That helps to avoid sublimation of personal anger into mass murdering grudge at the world, even though many people do commit suicides elsewhere.

Well, if I would be suicidal and angry at the world, I think I could get hold of a gun even in China.

The proliferation of internet discussion forums also contributes to one's perceived sense of social isolation and marginalization. The repeated hectoring, badgering, and ridicule that passes for "discussion" these days certainly can contribute to pushing one over the proverbial edge.

Such is the internet's contibution to combating the human population explosion.

By far the most gun violence is perpetrated by governments. Bush cried his crocodile tears for the Virginia Tech shootings, which were child's play compared to what he has been responsible for in Iraq. They should publish photos in the news of Bush posing with guns in front of a bare wall, like they did for the VA Tech shooter.

There is a movie about this people, is called "Bowling for Columbine". And the conclusion is that Americans live in an environment of fear created by the government and the media.

    I personally agree with this.

is it true that if you live in America and someone breaks into your house you can shoot them?

You could probably gut them with a bowie knife if you felt like it.

A builder, in Texas I think, was sued because his dogs attacked a burglar in the house he left them in to protect. His house. The burglar won the case.

    It's an odd place.

It intrigues me, but scares me at the same time.

there was a case over here, where a farmers house kept getting broken into and he was in the local bar one night and he heard these two boys planning to break into his house that night, so he went home and laid in wait for them and when they came he shot them, and he went to prison for 4 years i think it was 4 anyway.

it just seems weird that we cannot protect our family or houses, but i do not think what he did was right.

I remember it. What a joke.

It was unfortunate that one of them died (from what I remember?), but the guys should never have been trying to break into his house. You don't expect to be offered a cup of tea if you're caught and the law should reflect that. You should definitely expect violence and possibly death. If anybody comes into my house to steal my things and potentially mess with my family, laws or not, I will do my best to stop them with whatever's at hand.

What's wrong with a few good massacres now and then? I mean, it helps keep us alert and cautious about others who might do us harm. It also helps thin the "herd" a little bit. It's also good for the news media profits. Undertakers and gravediggers need work, too, ya' know.

Besides all of those good points, it gives us here at sciforums something to talk about ...other than how much y'all hate America and Americans.

I'm quite certain that people who 'suffer' from 'social isolation' don't feel like they can/should talk to relatives/'friends' either.

I blame the bullets ...or at least the ones that hit the people.

It is an interesting question. Gun right advocates maintain (not implausibly) that outlawing guns will not (and, statistically speaking, does not) reduce the number of murders. Yet the evidence is clear that murders in the United States are astronomically high as compared to other western nations.

If it's not the guns, then why are Americans such homocidal maniacs?

Actually we aren't the worst country for murders by far. What happens is how each country rates murders. If someone dies during a comission of a felony, even if it was simply and unintentional heart attack, our legal system classifies it as first degree murder. Meanwhile most other countries label is some sor of manslaughter. Thus the MURDER rate is higher here.

Another possibility is our repressive society, we just aren't as open as other societies. This produces stresses that cuases both murders and suicides (reported by US as murders)
