hola. i'm in college and taking philosophy 101 right now. so far, i think it's complete and utter bullshit, useless in every way, shape, or form. now, i don't know if philosophy in reality is actually bullshit and useless, or if it just seems that way because of my teacher. my teacher is the most full of shit, incoherent person i have ever met. my question is, is there any secret to passing this class? any advice that could help me through it? i read the material, i understand it, but there's no fucking point to it. just a bunch of things that everybody thought about, but these guys just thought about it entirely too much because they have too much time on their hands; it's like honestly, who gives a shit?

So, back to the question, anyone have any tips on how to get through and over it?

Also, is philosophy really this bad and useless or is it just my teacher? when i signed up for the class i really thought it would be interesting. all my teacher does is go on and on about useless shit though (off the topic ALL the time) and says the same shit over and over. everything we've covered is something i've already thought about, just to the extent of absurdity where it truly stopped mattering hours earlier.

So, bottom line: 1. Any tips for getting through it? 2. Philosophy really this bad or is it my teacher?

thanks )
and again, this isn't monkey, but he never posts anymore.

Drop out.

Seriously, if you hate it that much then you're wasting your time and effort. Merely passing is a waste of hours you could be spending doing something you like. I don't know your teacher so I can't make any judgements. But I can vouch for the 'little ideas' They're more important than you think, and you'll realize that if you choose to stay. (Even if you continue to hate your teacher.)

yeah, either way i have to stay. if i dropped i'd get the same grade as if i failed, so i figure i might as well. no tips on how to get through it though? i'm pretty good at bullshitting though, any suggestions on which way to shovel my shit?

well, the best thing I could reccommend would be to take an interest in it. Not neccessarily what he's teaching, but go out and find some philosophy that interests you(believe me, it exists), and then bring it into class. Discuss it in your essays (relating it to the ideas he wants you to discuss,) and use it to bring up controversy in group talk....that could make it fun.

Heh...take the topic that your teacher wants you to take, and completely oppose conventional thought. If the teacher's cool, he'll like it and you might get a high score, as well as instigating an interesting conversation. :)
