    Hi,
I haven't played computer games since the beginning of this century, but now I have got quite powerful video editing pc and would like to see what has happened in the game world since I left it.

Can you advise a few games to check out?

I have very little time for that, so please don't advise anything like the Sims or WoW, no time sucking games, but something where I can jump in play for an hour or so and then jump out.

My favourite games were Deus Ex, Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel, Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun, Morrowind, Imperium Galactica, Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption.

    Thanks

Command & Conquer Tiberium Wars is OK. If you liked Deus Ex, you might like BioShock.

Is there a new addition to the Fallout or Baldur's Gate family?

Yeah, check out the new command & conquer as nick suggested. Also, Oblivion is a great game. Medieval: Total War and Rome: Total War I also recommend. Hitman: Blood Money, Armed Assault (sequel to Operation Flashpoint which was a great game back then imo). You could try Far Cry which has amazing graphics. Another game I recommend is DEFCON but it doesn't really require a good rig.

Check S.T.A.L.K.E.R if you like shooters and Medieval II: Total War for strategies.

    Also, stick to the sequels:
Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars, ES IV

blivion, Galactic Civilizations II, Silent Hunter 4: Wolves of the Pacific (must try), etc.

Some good strategies: Supreme Commander and Europa Universalis III.

Unfortunately, great game Baldur's Gate hasn't any recent sequels, and regarding Fallout Tactics you could try Fallout 3 (same kitchen), but this game is more RPG than RTS.

Note on Supreme Commander, AVG can give it's EXE a false positive on it being a Virus even when it's a Retail version (Not copied from some Torrent address)

What looks like fun is Overlord however I haven't yet purchased it. (it would be cheaper to get on PC than 360) Reminds me a little of the idea behind Dungeon Keeper, however you don't build a dungeon, just a Castle of Evil intent.

Usually I hit a trade shop (GAME) where people trade in their old games, so you can pickup alot of older PC games for cheap.

You could look into trying out Deus Ex: Invisible Wars however it's plotline is no where near as sophisticated as the original. (knowing the original plotline you might feel a little let down)

There is a newer version of Sid Meier's "Pirates" so if you loved that game be prepared for some small changes in dualing. Other titles done is a newer version of "Civilization", "CivCity" and a game called "Railroad". (Railroad isn't the same as Sid Meiers Railroad Tycoon because I believe he sold that title to a games developer, so he had to create a different title to utilise his knowledge of trains further. Most of his games now are tailored to slightly younger audiences than they were originally.)

"Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium wars" gives you 3 factions to play with should you skirmish (against bots) or play against humans online. The AI has most definitely been improved over the earliest of the C&C games (When the AI would run all the way down a wall to find an entrance rather than just blowing a hole through it. ) there are however no Walls or Sandbags in base building.

There is also the "Black & White" games (original, version 2 and the expansion packs with each). "The Movies" done by the same company can also be fun to play, in fact people actually make real movies that they put online with the game, it's dependent on your creativity though.

You could checkout Valve's Halflife2 and it's expansions plus of course Portal, however Steam to me is still something that doesn't want to work properly. (Valve must be losing money from Steam crashing due to it's embedded Flash content on the shop tab, they should of written the client in Java)

There are a number of other games I could mention (Like some of Tom Clancy's work) however thats really FPS and doesn't necessarily contain any puzzles or serious brainwork.

As for Space (The one with stars in it).... well X3 now has an Official "No-CD" patch and expansion pack, of course X3 does require some specs to run visually and would keep you busy for a while trying to build a commerce empire up.

Oblivion as mentioned plus all it's expansions will make you disappear off the planet for about 2 months as you draw your curtains and only pickup the phone to dial out for take away (not the healthiest of life styles). Prepare to be consumed.

No, no thanks, I don't have the will to be consumed. I think I'll check out Tiberium wars.

I forgot Overlord. Definitely looks great. Explore your Dark Side!

I have a plan to install it again. Reminiscence on good old C64 days, although there are small changes as Stryder said. My only objection goes to the sound effects, i.e. voices (more mumbling).

Civilization is always playable. My recommendation too.

CivCity: Rome is a resource hog. Painfull experience. Very slow game even on lowest details (Celeron 1,7GHz, 512MB RAM, FX 5500 256MB).
Avatar, I guess you shouldn't have problems playing it on your machine, but my vote goes to Caesar IV.

If you like these type of games, then Tom Clancy's games are among the best FPS games. Try Ghost Recon 2: Advanced Warfighter, although I heard it's not tactical hardcore like the first part.

It's a good time for games actually. Overlord was a fun game, and you'll want to play it through at least twice (once being evil and once being semi-evil =P).

If I had to pick just 3 other games fitting your criteria I'd say Half Life 2 (plus Episode 1), F.E.A.R + Extraction Point (just a straight up FPS, but one of the creepiest games I've yet seen), and Homeworld 1+2 if you've never gotten around to them. C&C 3 was enjoyable, definately an improvement over Generals, though I didn't like the 3rd faction (the Scrin).

Fallout 3 is in production by Bethesda, the same company that created Oblivion, but won't be released until late 2008. I'm looking forward to that, as well as Mass Effect, Bioshock and Crysis.

So many games, but I'll probably just check two or three out. I have no wish to game extensively, just have a look around and see how the graphics have improved, physics engines and the like.
Personally I find games a very unproductive waste of time. I played them when I was at school, but now I have better things to do during my free time.

I checked out Oblivion, it's really nice, a very fine game for a role player. The game world could be a bit bigger, but I realize the limitations and the time it would take to create a bigger world.
The graphics were really nice as well.
